Found a set of old, but unused, Savarez red card strings from about 1975 or so in an old guitar case.

Have no idea how long strings last for, but they were not sealed in any kind of package, just the bare strings wound around the card.

Any idea if these would still be usable, or should I just throw them out?

why dont you just try them out?

If they are really so old..I could imagine that they might break when putting em on the guitar.. Just try.

In past I used Savarez. Nice strings.

They're dead. Give them a decent burial.

or donate them!

No point in donating them - ashes to ashes, dust to dust . . . . .

You could always put them on your guitar and if they sound good make a video for youtube called....Saverez strings still sounding good after 35 years in the case.[:D]

Then send the video to saverez and ask for a free set.[;)]

If they aren't oxydized, why shouldn't they work ?

Strings not played on should not detoriate.
If you use that set it will probably turn out just fine, unless it was exposed to heat in between.
( Had a guitar in a trunk left in extreme summer heat for two hours or so. The strings then, despite slack, had gone completely off intonation. Apparently heat will result in uneven diameter, with the nylon reshaping to original structure prior to processing.)

Um, if it was hot enough to slightly melt and warp your strings, then the glue holding your guitar together should have liquified as well!![:D][:D]

H M M M ; that YouTube video sounds like a great idea.

Unfortunately, with my playing they would probably sound like 35 year old strings that HAD been used all that time. . .

Anyway, I doubt if a French company would ever give freebees to a Limey.

But it might be worth a try. . .

The guitar was brought over from aborad for me, with the last of the route sent by a taxi ( whichs dumb driver put it into the trunk ).
The action had come down to near zero and the sound was so weak and out of tune that I thought it to be the natural condition of this instrument.

Already had set up a nasty mail to the seller, threatening to make him refund, when in a last attempt me came to the idea of restringing.
Totally disappointed I had let the gitar in its case for about 4 days or so without another look at it.

Luckily it had completely recovered, and with new strings on it turned out to even be the best of my collection.
CanĀ“t tell how relieved it felt to have had not sent out the nasty mail yet! [8D]
