i bought this saddle off of ebay. it was cheap and it was the right size but it looks weird to me. it's a camel bone, btw.

i dont need it to be bleached white but this looks like fat or grease to me.

do you guys think this is safe to use?

In a moment of desperation I stole a stuffed sterilised bone from my poor dog and cut a slice of bone to make a saddle - it looked just like the photo you have provided. I tried to degrease it with a household solvent and steeped it in bleach. I think I degreased it wll enough but didn't achieve a good looking bone piece.

After working the bone to size I fitted it to my guitar and used it for about a month before getting a new piece of bone from Madinter - I must admit, there wasn't any noticable change in sound to my ear - I only changed back for cosmetic reasons...

...if the RSPCA are snooping - I bought the dog a replacement bone.

I think I have a usual horse-bone-saddle. It smells like hell when filing it down.

Why is bone still the best material for saddles? Arent there now better materials available? Carbon or something?

I don't think you could pay more than $4 for even the highest quality bone saddle blank. Just check LMI or stewmac.
Also I don't trust Ebay, somebody could be selling you a bone from their pet dog that died or something [:D] or their latest human victim

hey guys,
stew mac has the right saddle for 7 bucks. plus another 7 dollars for shipping. lmii has it for 4 but shipping is like 7 or 8. i thought i could be cheap by buying from ebay but now i have to spend more.

now i have this piece of bone that could have been from a murder victim and smells like sperm just sitting around.

Definitely don't use it, I was thinking of making my own nut and saddles because I thought it was stupid to throw away money on something so readily available. That was until I looked into the proper way to degrease it and the dangers to the health of your guitars using un greased bone. It is simpler and easier to just buy it from a reputable supplier and much better for the health of your guitar.

i made a saddle from a dog chewing bone once and that was certainly a pain in the ass.

i wish i could buy one from a local luthier.

If not degreased properly the grease will slowly over time seep out into that lovely porous wood causing glue joints to separate. Yup your head could actually fall off from having a greasy nut[:'(] they probably didn't tell you that one in school lol. A very nice guitar could be damaged over a very cheap part, so you should probably ask yourself if your guitar is worth more then the $5 or $10. If you only need one nut or saddle it will cost you more money to prepare it properly then what you can buy it for.

If you really want to prep that piece here is what you have to do.
1 Simmer it for 2 hours in water with added dish soap at 200 degrees F.
2 Let it soak in ammonia or white gas(fire hazard) for a couple weeks changing the fluid a few times.
3 Then soak it in soapy water again to clean the ammonia or white gas off.
4 Leave it to air dry over night
Your done if you want it natural, if you want it white go to step 5
5 Bleach in 3% Hydrogen peroxide for 5-10 mins
6 Rinse it off thoroughly
7 Leave it to air dry
Done

This is why I couldn't be bothered making my own nuts and saddles for the guitars I build.

the white gas would cost more than a properly prepared bone.
plus, getting rid of it would be a problem. plus it's a fire hazard.

i used a bone like the one on the right last time. i used a table saw to cut mine (yikes!). and that gave me four saddles. with more precise cuts, im sure you could get more.
