hon -> Please help me to choose... (Jan. 3 2011 21:01:33)

Hi, I am a student in Flamenco living in Hong Kong. I am using my classical to practise and am looking at getting a proper Flamenco. Unfortunate, my local musical store has only one model for me to choose: a Jose Remirez FL2. It is within my budget. But within this price range, I know there are a lot more to choose from. I am setting my eyes on the Francisco Navarro's Grand Concert Flamenco or his special Grand Concert. Apart form the psychological factor that they are not "Made in Spain", they seem to be highly regarded in this price range. I am also considering the Manuel Adalid Viviana Professional Flamenco. The price is right but know little about the builder. Some of the mentioned guitars have french polished finish while others are lacquered. Is there a difference? The FN Special has 655 scale. What is the effect of this compared to standard 650mm scale? Will this use problem if my fingers are on the shortish side?

Any other suggestions are most welcomed. Thank you in advance.

I recommend that you go with the Manuel Adalid Viviana. I picked up a Viviana last year, and it has a marvelous sound, a great set-up, and is easy to play. Manuel Adalid is the chief luthier at the House of Esteve, in Valencia, but the Viviana is his own project. I paid US$2,500 for mine. You can get some very good flamenco guitars within the range you are willing to pay, but I consider the Viviana the finest flamenco guitar you can get at that price.

Cheers,

Bill

hey buddy. when I was in HK a few months back.. the Tom Lee music in TST actually has the FL2 and also 2 guitars from Amalio Burguet... i think a 2F and a 3F... i remember from trying it that the cheaper Burguet sounded better, can't remember how much it cost tho..

maybe u can check it out?

cheers

Hi Holyevil,

FL2 is all left there now and it is the only one left. It is selling for around US$2300. Demand on Flamenco guitars is so small here that they don't know when they are going to restock. I am relying more on internet purchase these days.

Hon

I wouldnt pay to much atention on a difference of 5mm in scale length. there are so many other factors that makes a guitar feel big or small.

Hon,
I have also a FL2, ...I believe is over priced for it's sound quality; is still comfortable to play.
good luck!

i also own an FL2 and am very satisfied with it, although i've heard many and played at least 3 or 4 of them and i have to say the quality varies greatly, i'm fortunate to have one of the better ones...

In your price range you may even find a good luthier nearby...

Richard,
would you please tell me what strings you use on your fl2?..... I have La Bella 2001 light tension.

anyway, mine sounds exactly how in the "Grisha Goryachev tries out a Jose Ramirez FL2" on youtube.

ciao and thanks

Giambattista

Hey mate.. maybe you can check out ebay or the classifieds here..
buying used would be the way to go... you get a good price for a (hopefully) good guitar.

what's your budget?
