cRobson12 -> What should I play for my school gig? (Dec. 17 2010 2:27:55)

Hey guys, I have a gig at my school coming up in late February (Which is awesome because I will have my Flamenco Guitar by then), and I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a composition that I should learn? I was going to play Santuario which is a Solea by Paco Pena which I just finished learning it and can almost play it without screw ups but I have gotten pretty sick of it. The only part that I tend to screw up on is the insane ligados, and the tremolo part (I am still working out those).

So what do you guys recommend? Preferably a Alegrias, Bulerias, Farruca, or Solea.

I consider my self to be at an intermediate level, but just barely.

Thanks!

Farruca goes over well. It can be easy for we flamencos, but sound really cool to the listeners who doesnt know much about it.

Also- use the ligado parts from Santuario as technical exercises. Ive never found better hammer-on/pull off material than that stuff.

no matter what style of music people are playing, i would always have the same advice for this question, so i believe it applies to flamenco too

i would suggest playing the pieces of music you are most comfortable with, and the ones that make you feel emotion. the songs that you feel the most will probably be the ones that you express that feeling really well with

maybe do some mock gigs for your friends, or record one for us, and get some advice which pieces other people think you play better

if you stick to stuff you have really practiced for a long time, then you can focus more on the emotion (or just close your eyes and let the emotion happen) unless you have dancers, if you have dancers keep your eyes open [:D]

i havnt tried that, thanks im going to look it up too

Farruca you say? Sounds good, sounds good. Any particular peices that you recommend? I have until late February so I have plenty of time to practice and get it down. Also I will take your advice on the Ligados and practice the hell out of them!

and Marduk I have the Santuario PDF if you want it! :) Also again ,I have until February so I might as well get something new into my brain so I have something to dedicate my self to until February

Here is Santuario by Paco Pena if anyone wants it. I have the entire Toque Flamenco set so If anyone wants anything from there just ask

I will record some stuff once my thumbnail grows back [:D]

you have played Santuario so I assume you have pena's toques flamencos and you're gonna play at school gig so probably not flamenco people
I suggest "Herencia Latina" ( Rumba ) .. because simply everyone will like it and it will stuck in their minds
cheers

I'd say unless you are pretty used to playing solo guitar in front of an audience in a concert situation, then do something you can practically play backwards.

If you are inexperienced, then nerves will reduce your technique and concentration by MUCH more than you think.

Things you can JUST play, you won't be able to play at all.

Playing something bullet-proof will make the whole thing a much more enjoyable experience IMO.

A stage is not the place for practising or playing a run you can do right two times out of three...

Unless you have a brass neck and totally believe in yourself of course...[;)][:D]

cheers,

Ron

Play a pretty arpeggio intro with a few minor chords that are easy on the ear. Has to be a good melody that creates atmosphere, nothing to out there or weird.

Don't worry if it's repetitive. Just make sure you can play it well. Then end it with some super fast rhumba strumming with lots of percussion on the body of the guitar.

This always gets the best response from the general public. The girls will all be screaming [;)][:D]

I played a bueria and granaina from Juan Martin when I mande the Abitur. I got much positive feedback.. Go for some easy traditional things. The people usually like it.

'Free Bird'

The Farruca from the Juan Martin books isnt bad.

Also remember- regular folks get impressed with rasqueados. If you get nervous during a performance, you'll be able to deliver rasqueados a lot better than picado.

Good idea!

Get a guitar strap so you can walk about the stage at the same time, shaking your butt. [:D]

(Umm..on second thoughts..maybe not... just in case some boys start screaming too...[:D])

cheers,

Ron

Haha you guys are hilarious [:D]

But with all do respect I would never play a Rumba... Mainly because this other guy in my school plays Flamenco but all he knows is Rumba and for some reason it makes me angry... (The entire Gypsy King scenario but small scale) lol

I will take look at it! Thanks brother

Granaina sounds interesting, I might give it a shot!

Still either and Alegrias, bulerias, solea, or farruca... I have plenty of time to get to know it like the back of my hand, so suggestions on which piece I should play will be nice! :)

Cheers!

bursche -> RE: What should I play for my school gig? (Dec. 18 2010 1:23:38)

Doit, I played Trafalgar when I made the Abitur, everybody loved it!

But seriously, try something that is simple to play and simple to listen to, Robson.
Rumbas or Tangos will work well.

gounaro -> RE: What should I play for my school gig? (Dec. 18 2010 1:37:12)

Rumbas, Tangos and Bulerias... Easy listening....

cRobson12 -> RE: What should I play for my school gig? (Dec. 18 2010 2:28:01)

I am looking for pieces in particular

XXX -> RE: What should I play for my school gig? (Dec. 18 2010 9:39:47)

Assuming nobody will be accompanying you, i would pick Rumba, Tangos or Farruca. Which one does absolutely not matter, just anything you can pull off well.

the only feedback i got for my guitar playing was just "why dont you play with a pick?" [&:] completely unmusical class, would have been a waste to perform anything.
