Opinions, thoughts etc.

(Dalaras is a great greek singer and i think he is friends with Paco, so they found something between rempetika and flamenco that they could do together)

I think Paco is definitely enjoying himself there.

IMO...Paco is quite an ordinary lad with an extraordinary talent for Flamenco guitar that has taken him on to an extraordinary life in the public eye..

In fact, before I actually knew who the young PdL was back in the 60's and had only an LP of "Dos Guitarras in Hispanoamerica" to go on...I asked Paco Peña..."Who is this guy..Paco de Lucia....does he just play Spanish and Latin folk tunes or what? He's got quite a stunning technique."

Peña looked at me and said... "Yeah he plays that stuff as well...but let me tell you..when Paco de Lucia chooses to play Flamenco..he is absolutely FANTASTIC (waving his hands in front of him as he said it...)

I had to wait a few months later before I eventually got "Fantasia Flamenca" finally sent to me from Spain.

Paco has ALWAYS been really great at the "pop" stuff IMO. He's a great session man.

Look at all his memorable "hits"...

Panaderos, Impetu, Celosa, Guajiras de Lucia...etc all the way up to Ente dos Aguas..

They have always been musically pretty simple but played with a breathtaking technique and always been the favorites around the world amongst guitarists, even amongst folk here.

The Cositas Buenas kinda stuff IMO is him out of his depth in composition etc and just basically noodling at a high technical level and fudging and blurring his way through a million notes and key changes and hoping that will sound complicated and cool. Jeez.. I bet he doesn't even enjoy it like he is obviously doing in the above video.

It's not his comfort zone....Gerardo and others, yes...but Paco no. Different personalites IMO.

Paco is just a big country boy with an amazing gift IMO....not one the most amazing musical composers of our time.

I think he is a lot more comfortable and happier with playing straight stuff, but will certainly noodle all the way up and down the fretboard with the best of them if challenged...

cheers,

Ron

hmmm...I know most of the George Dalaras stuff and tried to like it...but somehow he ( at least to my ears) sounds like the greek version of Julio Iglesias.

Wow, this brings back memories. I was a country boy back then, in utter shock. How could Dalaras betray rebetika for this exotic damn-foreigner music? He came up with the album "Latin" (with Al Di Meola) marrying older Greek 30s-50s latin-ish pop songs with flamenco. He went further on by collaborating with PDL? What was the world coming to? It was like watching Nirvana playing Britney Spears songs. Of course Dalaras was years ahead of us, and as a versatile artist that he is, he was entering the international music stage doing concerts with music gods. You could tell that it is Dalaras that is totally enjoying himself. (probably not believing he pulled that through)

Thomas,

I felt like you untill I watched Dalaras live. He is technically perfect but he does not move me. (kind of like PDL to be honest). Untill I watched him live, and totally changed my mind. His voice is like 100 chanters chanting at the same time.

You always bring the conversation to a lower level Doitsujin but I love you, you crazy bastard...! Ieftaseeeee ...! (=cooooomiing up, as the Greek waiter would tell you)

There is also a youtube video of George showing Al the progression of "Τι σου έκανα και με εγκατέλειψες" of Zabetas. And Al goes hmm..what..how did he do that...oh nice.[:D] Zabetas = the best.[:D]

Also in 1998 when i first saw Paco playing live in Athens, he dedicated Zyryab to Dalaras. I would have prefered Paco to play a rembetico with Dalaras though..[8D]
It would be very interesting!

You must be referring to this one:

Ron,

it seems we have completely different views on Paco. I find that I like his material from the middle of his career most appealing to me. I also think he used to play millions of notes in the early part of his career. I like a lot of the early stuff but a lot of it sounds like he was out to prove that he was the best and I just can't get into it. I don't like the "hits" that you mentioned apart from entre dos aguas.

I remember a few weeks ago someone posted on the forum a clip of the original Panaderos and I liked it a lot more than Paco's superfast version. My impression is that as he got older and he had the reputation, he stopped caring about showing off and focused more on the music and composition. Either way, while I don't necessarily like everything he puts out, it's cool to watch him evolve like this.

Dalaras (maybe) made money by promoting the Cyprus issue, and Panousis made money by making fun of Dalaras for it. What do you think is more honorable?
