Melchor -> Gig in Manchester (Feb. 18 2005 23:02:02)

Hi friends

Sorry i havent posted anything for a long time. But finally i decided to buy my own laptop. Well, the reason for my post is a recent memo from my company (GB Aiways) which will open a new base in Manchester. To celebrate the first route which will be Malaga they want a flamenco guitarist and a dancer to perform. The press will be there so guys it would be a good chance to promote yourselves. I offered my help to find the guitarist and dancer. I talked to the comercial department and they told me that the problem they have is that they dont have money to offer but instead a couple of flights on the Gb Airways route. GB Airways will pay for the expense of taking you to Manchester. I know it is not much but thats all they have to offer. If anyone is interested I can pass your details to them.

Un abrazo

Melchor

Welcome back on-line amigo, good luck with your search, I am sure you'll find someone with your contacts. Come back here often, we missed you.

Hi Melchor,

Nice to have you back.

I could be up for that with dancer and palmero (Deseo) [sm=Smiley Guitar.gif].
Would have to know date and be sure my guitar would not end up in the hold? Flights would have to be return and if it's an evening slot, the deal would have to include all transport with stay over in a good hotel?

Might be best to email me direct if you think a Scots accent wouldn't be out of place.

Cheers
Jim.

what no singer? - is this another case of the cheap stuff?
solo guitarra - fantastic
guitarra y cantaor - even better
guitarra, cantaor y bailaor/a - supurb

....guitarra y baile - only someone withy no shame, no integrety, and probably no compas would even consider the idea....

toque por cante

What mean??? 'toque por cante'

Guest -> RE: Gig in Manchester (Feb. 19 2005 21:06:13)

I've never seen anyone sing and play at the same time. It sounds quite advanced. Even Jason Webster on drugs never claimed to have scaled these dizzy heights!

Ron.M -> RE: Gig in Manchester (Feb. 20 2005 11:19:49)

solo guitarra - fantastic
guitarra y cantaor - even better
guitarra, cantaor y bailaor/a - supurb

guitarra, cantaor y bailaor/a y snake - the ultimate

Can you play Zapateado for a singer? Hmmm...

I've seen Manolo Sanlucar play for a dancer only..no singer, and his compás was OK LOL!

Miguel de Maria -> RE: Gig in Manchester (Feb. 20 2005 14:52:39)

Isn't this why we have a member only section?

Learned it from Cameron.

Guest -> RE: Gig in Manchester (Feb. 20 2005 19:01:53)

ok ok ok I didn't realise I was in such distinguished company - el de Sanlucar y Cameron (presumably this would be Camaron). And yes, granted we used to have zapateados on tables and things....but I think we would all be a bit dissapointed If a flamenco show consisted of nothing but zapateados, and the odd farruca - which is much more interesting with a singer anyway.

What pissed me right off in the original post was this assumption that a dancer and guitarist was all that was needed and that of course there was no lolly - you would think that an airline (even a budget one) would want to lauch a new route to Malaga with something a bit more authentic - a group from Malaga for example would not be hard to find. But I supose this is what we have to expect from todays cheep'n'cheesy marketeers. I was just suprised that no-one else took execption to it.

Whatever you say and which ever way you look at it a singer is never an optional extra in flamenco. Yes Camaron could play a bit in a party and of course guitarrists like Manolo Sanlucar and Vicente work with choreographed dance as living percussion...but this is something very different from a DUO!

Don't get me started!

Cante came first. Cante is the creative force within flamenco and any performance with a dancer must have a singer as its focus. The guitar is meaningless without it, the dance even more so. I'm amazed that I'm even having to write this in a flamenco foro - I'd like to think that there are some more imformed users who would agree with me, but I'm prepared for the worst.

that's about all - you can carry on in private - mejor!

Everybody in here knows that cante came first.. hombre.
But unless you have access to cante or baile like me (in sweden) solo guitar is the only way to go..

well never mind. why not register?? Do you sing or dance or play guitar??
And i belive your very welcome here.

huggs and BIG kisses!!

We have had this dicussion many times on this forum. I am with you on cante and guitar - I would rather have that than guitar and dance or even solo guitar.

I think we are probably split on this as many rate solo guitar over flamenco with cante but I am not one of them.

Another factor is availability and logistics, it is easier to sit in one's bedroom thousands of miles from Spain and try to learn guitar licks than find a singer to work with[;)]

I agree about flying someone in from Malaga and it wouldn't cost them much but taking exception wouldn't change anything, they'll just get a flamingo band in.

You are not unwanted and I suspect we agree with your sentiment but you took a rather condescending (and anonymous) tone to an innocent request from a Jerezano for anyone in the UK who might be able to help him out. Melchor could ask his friend Moraito, but I suspect Chico wouldn't leave Arco de Santiago for a free return flight to Manchester and some peanuts[;)]

El Moro don't make this your last suspiro, come on in. We are private only in the sense that we validate email addresses, for what that is worth and moderate the discussions - some flamenco forums have got out of hand elsewhere.

Guest -> RE: Gig in Manchester (Feb. 20 2005 19:54:39)

Yeah Moro. We all know that a cantaor would be the best. But in the company all they want is somebody dressed in a flamenco costume dancing to the tune of a guitar. I know lots of professionals in Spain but their budget is as low as my wage. Don´t get pissed off by anyone´s opinions we are just a group of aficionados talking about flamenco.

Un saludo

Melchor

cheers guys - I feel a lot better but I know it's not acceptable or appropriate to be a grumpy git under any cercumstances . I did fly off the handle a bit and never intended to cause offense, I'm sure you understand the feelings this stuff can throw up.....I'll certainly get registered, validated and more involved just as soon as I finish my anger management classes....

Ahh, what an entrance!

You love flamenco? You are amongst friends. Look forward to the Spring break in your classes[;)] As someone in the Simpsons once said "Damn those anger classes, I hate them!"

Absolutely not!
You obviously have strong views and opinions on this Art, not because you hate it, but because you love it.
So join the Forum, and start talkin' and arguing, LOL!

cheers

Ron
