What a show! Grisha performed 15 songs including five songs by Rafael Riqueni. The audience was extremely impressed by his performance—I didn’t hear one negative comment. The venue was small and intimate which was a great way to see a performance like this. If you have the opportunity to see him live you won’t be disappointed.

I’m not sure of the make of his guitar, but it had a rosewood fingerboard.

I'm jealous Pgh,

To see a solo Flamenco guitar recital at Grisha's level would be magic.

Doesn't happen anymore these days.

Would trade it in anyday for a ticket to these big stage concerts with Cajon, Farting Bass, Synthesiser and Violin, Trumpet, Sax, or Harmonica.

If I want that, I'd much prefer to see a concert by the great 60's/70s bands doing a reunion frankly.

Flamenco has a special place in my heart that I'm not willing to compromise on.

cheers,

Ron

You would have loved this. The venue was small--about 80 chairs set up around the center of the floor where Grisha sat. A few of the front row seats were about seven feet away from him. There were five tall tables with tall chairs and lit candles on either side of the seating area. It was more like watching a performance in your own living room or actually getting to sit on stage with the performer during the concert than anything else. Grisha put tremendous effort into his performance--he barely opened his eyes the entire first set. BTW he taps his foot every other beat for Buleria.

I checked his site and he gave a free performance--IIRC--at the University of Pittsburgh a few days before. If/when he tours Scotland check his website a week before his performance--who knows maybe you'll get lucky and have the chance to see him twice in one week!

Saw Paco de Lucia the other week with synth etc.. and three too many extended electric bass solos! A shame as there were two fantastic singers, Duquende and David de Jacoba just sitting by idle, I would have rather heard more of them.

The next week Moraito and Jose Merce was in another league- no bass, harmonica etc.. only occasionally subtle cajon and palmas. Just lots of feeling and raw power. I think you would have enjoyed it Ron.

It's cool that he's performing Riqueni's music now.
He's been my favourite composer since I heard his recordings for the first time.

It is his Blue Devoe Negra he played. I was supposed to get to play it this morning before he left, but I could not reawaken after hanging out with him after the show until late and then dropping my wife to the Airport at 5:00am. It sounds really fantastic. The Vicente Amigo kind of super sweet on the trebles and bite like hell in the basses kind of sound, and I was really hoping to take it for a test drive. Maybe next time.

Ron the show was Magic. I really think it was magic. Guys Grisha has added some deep deep sensitivity, musicality, energy, and raw flamenconess to his immaculate techninque. This ranks up there with my top 3 live guitar experiences. He was ridiculously good in my opinion. I am beyond inspired right now.

The concert was free to the university people and whoever else found out, but University of Pittsburgh paid us nicely so we added this 50 minute performance as a second show for Grisha.

Well Grisha came to DC too. I tried to contact him but he did not respond. To my surprise he showed up with his girlfriend at my gig sunday night. Jesus Montoya and some other friends were there as well and after a long buleria with 4 different singers I invited grisha up to play with me. It was a really fantastic impromptu performance. He invited my wife and myself to his concert the next night which we attended and it was amazing. A shorter program I think then pittsburgh but he hit all the best pieces i think. Sabicas, PDL, Riqueni, Vicente, Escudero, etc. Amazing technique and sound. Tons of feeling.

Afterwards I took him and his girlfriend out to eat and we jammed all night in a small bar. It was quite inspiring to get "owned" by such a maestro. He is quite funny and sarcastic like me too so we had a great time playing and hanging out with just a couple friends.

His guitar was lester devoe blanca, but painted dark like a negra. I think it adds more flamenco "bite" to his sound then the guitars he was using before. Anyway, here is a bad pic someone caught at my gig the first night. I will try to load better pics if find any.
