I wonder if i'm spending a lot of money at strings. I really want to know what is the duration of your bass set and how often do you change them... I know it depends how much do you play but in normal 2 hours of studying, i suppose that 2 weeks are enough. What's your opinion?

sounds about right...
i buy two sets of basses to every set of trebles
strings by mail sell split sets so when i buy my luthier blues i double the bass order
seems to work...[:)]

when i had no financial problems and played a lot daily plus dance classes, i put on a new set every 2-3 weeks...nowadays that i'm on a tighter budget, one set has to last 3-4 months, but to be honest, it helps your playing when you have a set of dead strings and you try to make the same sound as before...obviously if you have a choice just change them :)

I changed a full set yesterday, but it was probably 6 months old.
Id like to change strings once a month, but Im too lazy to do it.

2 hours a day gives me around 4 weeks. The trebles last forever.

One month. I get headaches from dull strings.

yohan -> RE: How long do you keep your bass set? (Dec. 1 2010 15:51:15)

every month!!?
I change strings every 4 months or something [:-]
just clean them after long sessions, and reverse the strings often. that way you can do a very long time with a set.
I also dislike the sound of new strings anyway so I use a set as long as possible [;)]

I practice over 3 hours a day and they after 2 weeks the thread around Savarez Aliance bass strings actually breaks. No choice but changing them. But I am through using these and use a different kind that last around a month I think.

thats very fast, try the things I said above, it might helps.
I use the normal d'addario strings btw

I dislike the sound of new strings, having care to clean the strings to the end of every session , considering 10 hours a week : one full set more or less every three months; ( with strings savarez, luthier , La Bella)

ciao

Well i did that too. But nowadays i just pay 4$ for a bass set. BAM! No more reverse bass strings. Btw the effect of reversing the strings only last several days anyway ;-)

Funnily enough, I have moved to finding ways to play things to cause the least amount of string wear possible. That unfortunately means very little sliding on the bass strings, and rotating between several capo levels every now and then to try to spread the wear over the entire length of the string. I used to change them often (probably once a month) because I didn't use the above "method" of trying to make them last longer. What would force me to change them was the basses' windings coming off, and that starts causing buzzing and can get windings into your skin / fingers (which is NOT something you want).

Nowadays, I change whole sets only about twice per year, but I play two guitars equally, so you can say I change whole sets about four times a year. [:)]

That's the only reason why I change them indeed.
But what you can do about that, before the windings coming off, is to restring the string an inch 'higher', so the wearing moves up a few frets, or reverse it completely. Of course you need to have your strings uncut so they're long enough.
But all the 'cool' guitarist don't cut off their strings anyway right? [:D]

Doitsujin -> RE: How long do you keep your bass set? (Dec. 1 2010 19:51:00)

I keep them till they break if I donĀ“t need good sound for a gig or in some classes when playing for dance.

I agree totally. too short, that is why I'm changing strings, this is my last Savarez set. But they sounded good but my Gallistrings Genius sound just as nice and don't break at every fret unwind like these.

Wow 4 months! I never thought of reversing strings. it's a good idea and it would be worthwhile for the Savarez., they would last about 3 weeks before falling apart. But for the Gallistrings, I pretty much change them because I no long like the sound not because they are destroyed. I like the brilliance.

about once every 4-6 weeks

i reverse the strings once. after about 4 weeks

i reckon i get 1-2 weeks extra

btw when i put the strings on i wind the bass strings onto the winders carefully and neatly so there are no kinks and the string doesn't cross over itself at all.

When i reverse the strings all that new string from the winder is between the soundhole and bridge for the right hand,

the section of the string from the first 1-5 frets is over the 12-19th frets,

the unused string from the 12-19th frets is over the 1-5 frets and

the section of string frombetween the soundhole and bridge is now on the winder[;)]

i found that too, but also that with Savarez, they spend days stretching and going out of tune, then you have a couple of days where they sound the best, then they go dead, then they break. I prefer a string that settles in fast, sounds nearly as good for a long time before it goes dead, and doesn't break.
