Ravel's Bolero is almost an obsession with me and I've got Lord knows how many versions of it. Went to see the Halle Orchestra do it live in Manchester last year and may well do the same this. It's been hammered to death by groups such as Ballet Espanol and many flamenco dancers have also danced it to their own choreography. It's always been Spanish Classical in terms of music, and Spanish dance in general terms. No one has ever regarded it as flamenco or even claimed it to be to the best of my knowlege.
Magnificent atmospheric music that invokes images of Spain, yes, and gives great scope to dancers; flamenco..no!

No, I know it's not flamenco, just trying to put the rhythm into some sort of flamenco context to see if the underlying structure could be expressed in 4's or 3's as Tangos or Sevillianas etc.

I've got involved with Royal Scottish National Orchestra leading to a short warm up performance before Sharon Isbin comes on to play Rodrigo's Aranjuez, sounds grand but no big deal, just that RSNO would like something based on Bolero?

I saw Sharon play the Aranjuez here in town. I believe she was amplified, but you had to strain so hard just to make out the guitar over the orchestra. She needed to pump it up. She has good technical fluency, but you have to be able to hear it. Also, she used a pick for the strumming, and laid it on her knee while not using it.

Well, you could always use Lecouna's "Malaguena" Jim. Not boleros, or even flamenco but very atmospheric Spanish music. It's also been recorded as "Spanish Gypsy Dance"
and has a nice run to it and can incorporate a guitar solo. Hey, is anyone old enough to remember Ted Heath having a hit with it on the reverse of "Cloudburst" in the late fifties?

that's so ironic .....she has a video on guitar.com where she says smth like this:
"i dont teach any other type of guitar ....but classical"....and she says that having
such a condescendent way....(maybe I'm wrong here...but to me that's what it
appeared)....and now she's using a pick for strumming.I'm not saying that it's not
ok to use a pick...just saying that's some irony here IMHO.

she's a great player anyway ....and she meet Andres (Segovia) too.

As for the bolero...u're obsessed ...everything seems flamenco after a while.[;)]
