I walked into a music shop in town yesterday to discover (with horror!) that the Brits overcharge like crazy for simple guitar strings. Since I can save quite a bit of money ordering in the States and picking them up when I visit home in a couple of weeks, I plan to order a few sets to bring back and last me through summer or so. I'll be ordering D'addario Pro Arte composites (EJ45C) - is there any problem buying them and leaving them to sit for a while, or can I just store them somewhere safe and they'll be fine?

I buy strings in bulk, and they end up sitting for a long time.

Thus far, i havent noticed any issues. D'addario's packaging in particular is pretty solid imo.

lol! how much were they? sometimes you have to shop around a bit, some places are more expensive than others.

also, most music shops are selling loads of electric and steel string acoustic strings, so these are probably cheaper, but not many nylon strings, which are more expensive. if you can find a shop that caters more for classical music the nylon strings might be cheaper.

but i always buy mail order in the UK to get strings cheaper

16 pounds at the shop! [:'(] lol... even online, though, I couldn't find them any cheaper than 10 pounds, whereas on Amazon in the States and other US-based strings sites, they're around 8 dollars, so literally half price. I'd imagine for some strings (like the composites) you might, if you're ordering in bulk, be better off buying from the States and paying for the shipping. Maybe!

£16 is way overpriced, usually they are £9 or £10 in shops

I pay just over £7 mail order per set, but it's cheaper if you buy in bulk. try stringbusters.com

I was referring to the composites, which are just over 11 pounds on that site. Still fairly pricey compared to 8 dollars! More than twice the price, in fact, with the exchange rate.

Strings By Mail is one of the best places to buy strings. They are really nice people, and very knowledgeable about strings, and I'm sure that if you ask them they will be happy to advise you on how long it is safe to store strings, and also the best way to store them for maximum life.

I haven't bought in bulk cuz I change my strings 1 to twice a year..
but I bought in bulk for my teacher when I was in Singapore 2 months back, bought 40 sets, and he bought 50 sets prior to that as well.. lasted him a few years. Told me there wasn't any problem.

16 pounds is like the price of strings in sydney.. about 24-30 dollars

i keep mine in a cigar box with one of those silica gel packets that comes with instant noodles or electronics sometimes.

Cigar box for the strings, humidifer for the guitar case... Anthony, just buy some cigars and you've already got everything else you need for a collection! I can see you as a cigar-smoking industrialist in a three-piece suit....

What if you developed a reputation as the guy who played flamenco while smoking a pipe on stage? That would probably sell. Then your pipe smoking would allow you to make more money, which would in turn allow you to buy more expensive and fancier tobaccos, and so on in a vicious delicious cycle.

I buy strings 40 sets at a time from juststrings.com (mostly luthier reds) and I've never noticed any deterioration. That usually last me about a year - I only use about 25 sets and the rest I sell on to students when they need them.

keep them submerged in extra virgin olive oil.

then, when you are ready to use, simply toss in the skillet and get a good sear on them. helps you play faster. [:D]
