so what is extremeno? a style? or does it mean extreme?

It means from Extremadura, a province in Western Spain. Extremadura is historically a very harsh region of Spain, and many of the conquistadores came from Extremadura. For example, Hernan Cortez, conquerer of the Aztecs in Mexico, and Juan Pizarro, conquerer of the Incas in Peru, were both from Extremadura. By way of digression, I remember a wine-soaked evening when I was in the university, and the discussion turned to the question of, "Who were the toughest men in history?" Without question, my vote went to the Spanish conquistadores.

Cheers,

Bill

You guys kill me.

It would be good if those of you throwing wisecracks around could first post your own videos of cante accompaniment, on stage in Spain in front of a large knowledgeable audience, just so I know you have the credentials to back up your criticisms. Else I might start to think you're just a bunch of armchair quarterbacks whose comments really can't be taken seriously.

Here's another one. I don't think this one has been sped up either - that must disappoint some of you too.

And to the OP - I think you can trust that Ruben knows what he's talking about.

if you read the posts above, you see the Ricardo commented on his accompaniment skills.

have you seen a video and pictures of Ricardo accompanying the famous singer Esperanza Fernandez? if not, here he is:

so yes, Ricardo has the credentials to back up his criticisms.
I personally think that Ricardo is a better flamenco guitarist than Ruben and thats because I purchased his 2 albums (including an album where he accompanies Jesus Montoya in a live show) and they are really awesome (accompaniment and solo). infact, I think there a lot to learn from his accompaniment album!

if you look at Ruben's album (which he posted samples on youtube) , it has no cante (or I have not seen them) and its all jazzy fusion non-sense garbage.

Ricardo -> RE: I'm very sorry but I have to ask about someone you don't like (Feb. 29 2012 2:10:22)

That one was a lot better.... He got some strange rh moves but overall
Accompaniment was fine.

Yojimbo -> RE: I'm very sorry but I have to ask about someone you don't like (Feb. 29 2012 2:44:59)

No I haven't seen that - thanks for posting it. I liked it - as much as I can like cante that is.

I don't especially like cante though - by anyone. And I can't stand jazzy fusion stuff either, which I suppose tells you that I'm not that keen on Ruben's recorded material at all.

Out of curiousity - what do you like? You already said you can't stand PdL, don't like cante, nor modern flamenco. I'm wondering what's left? Sabicas and Paco Pena?

Not to condescend, but try to keep an open mind. When someone says 'I know what I like' what they usually mean is 'I like what I know'.

kudo -> RE: I'm very sorry but I have to ask about someone you don't like (Feb. 29 2012 4:14:50)

Cante can be acquired taste sometimes , and now the cante is what I enjoy the most in flamenco.it was not like that when I first started, your tastes will change over time. You will learn more towards certain things but your mind will open up. I remember disliking alegria the first time I ever heard it and now it's one of my favorite palos

Well, yes I like those two you mention, and Moraito. Older PdL stuff is ok too for me. It seems my tastes run to a single guitar playing solo traditional flamenco. I'm not keen when it's mixed up with other instruments.

I'm not as adverse to cante as I once was, although it's not something I really like. I do like dancing, although I tend to see it as accompaniment to the guitar which is a little backasswards. I hope to be good enough one day to accompany a dancer, although I have a long long way to go before that happens. I'll also be switching to another teacher based in Toronto at some point who has some connections in that area.

It's not quite true that you can't teach an old dog new tricks......but it is slow going.

Evil eye and funky tonos notwithstanding, it's still pretty cool to be playing for Guadiana, IN Spain.[;)]

Wonder who he had to con to get that gig.

...just kidding [:D] Or maybe not.... [8|]

Adam -> RE: I'm very sorry but I have to ask about someone you don't like (Feb. 29 2012 11:36:33)

Accompaniment was fine. Cheesy 17 second long spiralling text intro was annoying. [:D]

Also, am I the only one who thinks he kind of looks like an unwashed Al di Meola?

Wow. When Guadiana was in Sanlucar he accompanied MY singing! [:D][:D]

That's an inside joke, even if it is true ( [;)][:D]) but truth is guys like Ruben and myself (foreigners) are lucky to get a chance to play for any greats in Spain. It is important to remain humble IMO....not so sure spamming everywhere to self promote and putting other teachers down is the best way to do that. [;)]

I agree with your sentiment here. Spamming is bad, as is putting down others - regardless of who's doing it or who it is.

Guadiana should be proud..he had the honor to play the same guitar that I played at your house.. ;) hehe One of my few favourite singers. Even though..his CD is a big rumba collection.. But the 2 bulerias and the sequirya are very good.

Florian -> RE: I'm very sorry but I have to ask about someone you don't like (Mar. 1 2012 4:43:19)

Ok i got to say that's impressive, getting to accompany Guadiana, got to respect that

Ay ay. I agree. This is really boring. Post something else and leave Mr. Diaz and his followers in peace.
Foro flamenco at its worst. Repetitive mobbing.

I think the terms you're looking for are circlejerking and asskissing.

Let's have more of both.

You´re right, I did know that one, but since english is my third language, I dont use words like that. But I use a lot of them in Danish.

I don't think it requires anything that drastic again, for me as long as it dosent get aggressive or result to abusive language id prefer allowing enough time for people to come around and make things right with each-other, helps avoid future run-ins, id rather see 2 people say what they need to say and make a menace, find a middle ground themselves rather than being told to shut up

it seems like its fine now isn't it ?...whatever it was, it seems to have passed

Tocapelotas is a very common spanish word, but I didnt expect Dr. Diaz to be a lazy, do nothing type. He seems all the contrary to me. Kind of nervous type, always doing something.

Estafando a la gente. (Cheating people).

"Tocapelotas" was meant, in that context, in the sense of an annoying person, a 'pain in the arse'.
