aloysius -> RE: JM Canizares bulerias (Nov. 23 2010 2:47:26)

I've been listening his new album for the last couple of days - it's a mixed bag, a couple of commercial numbers (the rumba and the vals, he does some cool soloing though), a ballada (a reworked number for the "noches" album), a guajira. The Buleria, Solea por Buleria, Alegria and Tangos are all pretty kick-ass imo. By far the best track is the last one, a libre "fantasia" with an amazing tremolo section. The album's certainly growing on me. It has all of cañizares' trademark wierdness (outside notes etc) but much more toned down than in "noches" (he goes easy on the quarter tone bends this time, too). There's no cante whatsoever though - not even a coro. Would recommend if you liked "noches" or just want to hear some great ideas - modern, but it's a very different modern to the laid back groovyness of some of the current andalucian guitarists like Diego or Dani. Will keep me going until my copy of "orate" arrives.
