nice very laid back and personal way of dancing. reminds me of the late José Vargas "El Mono" dancing style. lots of of arm movement.

No – a good bailaora dances like that at any age. It's the essence of the female baile – graceful arms and hands, and minimal footwork.

JasonMcGuire -> RE: Baile video (Nov. 20 2010 18:15:18)

loved it Norman.

To summarize the formula of success: ... post some baby photos, puppets ....or old people...

cathulu -> RE: Baile video (Nov. 20 2010 19:07:41)

[:D] By your measure I am getting close to the forumla for success, another 10 years and I will be there!

Fun video. I liked the crowd participating in the palmas.

Well . . . she's a good dancer, but I don't know why she felt the need to go into a bump and grind burlesque routine. When the baile loses dignity it is no longer flamenco.

There certainly is a quality of pudency in flamenco that is sometimes underestimated or even unappreciated, but...

How about the old lady dancing in the patio in the Unesco video? Especially at 3:26.

yeah, flamenco talks alot about sex, but its mainly undertones, or talking in riddle's that people in "the know" get. plus the whole gitano culture and taboo of sex and sexual feelings.

being honest about it, seeing a beautiful, buxom and volumptous flamenco dancer is something to behold. [:D]

before i got engaged i was enamoured by a wide variety of dancers.[:D] but thats all gone now [;)]

henrym3483 -> RE: Baile video (Nov. 22 2010 21:19:25)

one other thing and i'm asking the bailaors and bailaoras on this forum.

do alot of the flamenco techniques damage the knees or any of the other joints over time, do people revert to the arm moves when older because their footwoork would hurt them?
alot of taconeo looks hard on the knees and hip joints with the force i've seen on some floor boards.

Ailsa -> RE: Baile video (Nov. 22 2010 21:49:31)

At the risk of sounding boring good technique saves a lot of injury. For example if you think about a golpe (stamp) - the correct way is to raise the foot up at the back and let it drop forward and down to the floor. You are less likely to cause damage to your feet that way. But if the movement comes straight down (which is incorrect anyway) you can damage your feet

Floor surface makes a lot of difference too - I find dancing on stone or concrete floors very unforgiving.

I don't think flamenco is hugely damaging to the joints though. Unlike age, which plays havoc with them [:D][:D]

Bulerias comes from burlar, cousin of the word burlesque -
Bulerias are not about dignity. Cante jondo is, of course.

If you're not having fun, you're not doing it right...

A dancer can have all the fun in the world without resorting to vulgar movements and displays. Take another look at some of them. "Dignity" doesn't necessarily mean strait-laced and somber and deep - in the baile it means a controlled display of emotion, whatever the emotion happens to be.

JasonMcGuire -> RE: Baile video (Nov. 23 2010 1:31:15)

Hola Paco!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paco is from Tres Mil in Sevilla and has been around a lot of flamenco. He sings at a lot of gigs here in the Bay Area and having him around the foro is a great thing.

cathulu -> RE: Baile video (Nov. 23 2010 2:00:07)

Jeeesh, you are a prude! I didn't see anything vulgar in it, you must have a dirty mind. A prude with a dirty mind is a bad combination! Congress is filled with those types... [8D]

Hey, that's hilarious. Anyone who knows me would laugh their heads off at someone calling me a prude. This has nothing to do with prudery and has everything to do with flamenco.

This is flamenco dancing, and any baile has to retain a certain degree of decorum, or else – as I said – it deteriorates into buffoonery instead of gaiety – even in Bulerias, and demeans the art.

Take another look at the original video – she's having all kinds of fun, but she retains the grace and charm of true flamenco dancing.

cathulu -> RE: Baile video (Nov. 23 2010 4:32:55)

Hmm, I was looking at the original video from the OP. So maybe you were looking at another one. It that is the case, I am mistaken. Glad I raised a laugh then. Which video are you referring to?

Edit, OK I watched the second one. Didn't bother before. I think I know what you are talking about! [;)]

That's Pastora Galvan, you don't get much more flamenco than that family.
This is from her newest show, first half she comes out as a poor housewife in apron and bare feet. Second half she does with shoes.

I'm surprised someone doesn't attack her for not wearing shoes...Sheesh.
Decorum, my ass. Duende is about abandon.
