Hi again folks, Just another post to find out if anyone has heard of a guitarist. This time its Juan Manuel Canizares. Apparently he's done some work with Al Di Meola and Paco De Lucia. But, as usual, I haven't heard any of his work (I'm currently building up my collection of Flamenco Cds), so I cannot comment on it. If anyone can recommend a good Cd of his start with, or has an informed opinion, it would be interesting to hear it. Thanks. He's a great modern style player. If you like modern flamenco guitar playing , get his cd.

Hey it's the funny looking fella on my PdL DVD [:D] He plays with PdL and this other guy as a trio on that DVD, great playing though I find that the other guitarist accompanying PdL is better. Maybe he doesn't show off his stuff as much but from the DVD, this balding man accompanying PdL has quite amazing technique. Could barely tell the difference between PdL's and the balding man's picado when they played Zyrab. Cheston

The bald guy is Jose Maria Bandera, Paco de Lucia's nephew. Yes he is great and better than Canizares IMO too. He does the guitar work for Sara Bara's Mariana Pineda, which you can get on DVD also. He carries the show and the music is by Manolo Sanlucar. Canizares is very modern, w/ funky bends and south american harmonies, ala Brazilian guitarists. His first album has grown on me, the name escapes me and it is in my car somewhere. He is giving a concert here in DC next week w/ Gallardo. I will check it out. Ricardo

I have his "Noches de iman y luna" album and like the others sad he is a modern style flamenco guitarist. He is very good.[;)][sm=rolleyes.gif]

Sounds like Canizares isn't bad. At least the people so far seem to prefer him to Carlos Montoya! Yes, he is doing a series of concerts with Gallardo... that's where I heard of him. It was in the newspaper here in London that he was playing a few days ago. If I'd have heard about it in time, I would have checked it out. But I think Gallardo is a Classical guitarist, not Flamenco... still should be good though. I think I will buy a Canizares album to try it out. But can anybody tell me if the trio with PDL, Canizares and Bandera is available on CD, and if so, what's the title?

I'm not sure if the trio is on CD, but the DVD is worth the money. 2 DVDs, one about his life story. My favourite quote is, 'I can play any scale as fast as I can but sometimes, a beat of silence means more to me', very very true, speed doesn't mean you're good or that you should abuse your ability [:D] Another thing is about how he became what he is today, stopping school at an early age and note this everyone, 'I shut myself alone in the room for hours everyday'. Guess that's the secret of success. Utterly inspiring. The other DVD has his amazing version of Aranjuez, absolutely breathtaking. Then the Trio comes along playing Zyrab, Cana de Azucar, Cancion de Amor etc. I admit that I did fall alseep on my couch while listening to the slow songs though [:D] BUT! It's still great lol Cheston

Cheston, It seems I may have to settle for the DVD... although I didn't want to, as I don't currently have a DVD player, but can only watch them on my computer. But I'm sure actually getting to SEE them playing will probably be much better than just hearing them on a CD. However, I can't seem to find the DVD on the Amazon.co.uk/.com website... could you please tell me the title or post a link? Thanks. James

It is called "Francisco Sanchez". That is Paco's real name. They play as a trio on Paco's Aranjuez recording CD, but they play classical peices by Albeniz. For me it is boring. They play high energy rumbas and stuff on the DVD, which I recommend very highly as well. Get a DVD player man,it will be useful for learning stuff on guitar. Get the Rito y Geophraphia del toque DVD set next. Ricardo

Ricardo, Thanks for the advice. I'll look into getting the Paco DVD. And yes, I do need to get a DVD player at some point... but I'm waiting until the ones where you can record from Video onto DVD are a bit cheaper... that way I can copy all my heavy metal tuition videos onto DVD too.
