does anyone know where i can get some cheap cypress for back and sides? i don't care if it's monterrey or mexican or whatever. i'm just looking for something similar to spanish cypress, but without the expensive price. i've tried to find suppliers in the us and canada, but it seems a bit harder than i thought. any suggestions would be helpful. thanks.

Contact Klass Giesbrecht. He has a store on ebay. I've bought some beautiful Alaskan / Cypress sets from him perfectly clear lumber for a great price. He's very professional and nice to deal with.

Alaskan Yellow Cedar, Canadian Cypress or whatever you might call it is a nice wood for a Blanca.
It sounds slightly different than Med. Cypress, but I dont think its worse. I´ve built 2 guitars with it and they both turned out really well. Simons guitar that I made in the "El Guitarrero" DVD is made with A. Y. Cedar/CDN cypress
The Alaskan Yellow Cedar that I´ve got is very well cut, stiff and stable.

Dont buy some cheap mushy 3rd range whatever cypress. Its not worth it.

What do you consider a high price? I have been buying excellent Mediterranean Cypress for around $50/ set. How much do you need?

Agree - buy the best quality you can get. These sets are old growth and quarter-sawn stock. I paid around $25 for each back and side set. It's very similar to work with as Spanish Cypress.

Another vote for Wasillawood, I love it. Doesn't give you the looks or the smell but it can make a great guitar.

I am currently buying all my cypress from Akustik in Turkey (they're online). I don't know what the current price is in dollars or euros since the socialists in our respective governments are doing their best to destroy the value of both currencies.

Sorry, it's a (sort of) reference to American politics, it's a nickname for Alaskan Yellow Cedar because of a certain well-known person from Wasilla, Alaska [:D]

I bought some really nice cypress from Klass at the beginning of the year - $23.50 US per set. The shipping to the UK was $47, so I went mad and ordered two sets and got the shipping at the same price. It did take until March to actually get it to me, and then it cost (I think) £22 in import duty, which I didn't expect. Neither was the vendor's fault though, and I found him to be very helpful throughout.

Haven't started the build yet for one reason and another, but sometimes I just open the package and sniff the aroma . . . .

I don't know what the laws are in the UK but in the US if the wood is non-native and not endangered there is no duty. I've had import drones try to slap duties on wood shipments so I always take along the papers from a previous shipment to show them. Most international wood vendors have agents who take care of this before the wood is shipped so the wood just comes to your door without any hassle.

Even if the wood is cured its a good idea to let it acclimate before using it. So waiting awhile is a good idea. I try to give it at least three years.
