Ron.M -> Did you know? (Oct. 30 2010 20:47:11)

I heard a debate on the Radio that the English "Cross of St.George" in some quarters was considered in modern Britain as being "racist" and "offensive" and should not be displayed in public.

Can you imagine a situation where the English flag is banned in England?

Is this PC gone mad or what??

cheers,

Ron

why is it racist and offensive? it's the traditional flag..
I think PC is being overdone..

This is absolutely nuts Ron. I am trying to imagine a situation where the Spanish are not allowed to wave Spanish flags after a football match....

It seems sinister to me that there are people even making these rules up. How can a national flag be considered offensive in its own country. I am surprised that noone has come up with a simple counter argument. England is a sovereign state. The objection to flying its own flag could be interpreted as a symbol to usurp the monarchy. If anyone living in England is upset by the sight of an English flag then I think they should be charged and tried for treason. I think a few jail for life sentances might stop this nonsense.

Doesnt the flag originate from the Templar Knights? They must be turning in their graves.

Does anybody actually know the meaning of the flag?

Agreed, Pim!

I think for some reason the flag has slowly accquired a certain association with the BNP, skinheads and football hooligans.

(For those who don't know, the British National Party is an extreme right wing organization with especially strong views on immigration).

Personally I think the problem is caused by too many Quangos, Think Tanks and Focus Groups where the well-paid members (usually Politician's spouses, families and friends) dream up this stuff to try to justify their huge earnings.

Like the Health & Safety regulations adopted by certain Councils which ban the playing of traditional school playground games such as "conkers" and prohibit floral arrangements in hanging baskets outside pubs and restaurants etc.

The other day, a friend of my wife ordered a new tumble-drier from a big High St retailer.
She lives in the top apartment of a 3 storey building.
She took the morning off work to wait in for the delivery men.
When the van arrived, two burly men jumped out and carried it into the building.

They then told her that they would have to leave it at the entrance as they couldn't carry it up the stairs "for Health & Safety reasons".
They said she would have to get friends or neighbours to take it up.
Either that, or they would just take it back to the shop.

The whole country is going to pot IMO..[:D]

cheers,

Ron

I'm sure whoever came up with that idea is against FC Barcelona [:D]
