Chiste de Gales -> Im so bored with JM Tientos! (Oct. 27 2010 13:44:53)

I need a recommendation.

Here's where I am as a player:
Degreed in classical guitar, got very serious about flamenco playing 2 yrs ago, have been accompanying a dance group for a year, have 20 palos memorized.

I started learning almost every palo in the JM 2-book set (the older one).
Then I started upgrading my material palo by palo to some more advanced
stuff.

I just cant find a good Tientos to move up to. I practice the JM one, and after about 5 minutes I want to scream out of boredom.

Thanks!

I am sure you are familiar with Paco Pena's Tientos De La Bahia. The Standard by which all Tientos ought to be judged!!

This might entertain you for a while [;)]

For something before the "Contemporary Flamenco Guitar" area,
you can also have a look at "llanto a cadiz" and "tientos del mentidero" from PDL.

Or if you want some supereasybasic stuff [:)]
I uploaded 1 year ago this tientos. It's the first palo i learned. Teaching me by el Carbonero, Jerez.

It's the stuff he use to teach to the dummies beginners.
I was only 3 months of guitar when I went to him and he taught me that...Great times [:)]

Obviously it took me a LOT of time and practice to be abble to play this with aire [&:]

I should have thought of that! I already play Santuario and Puerta Tierra.

Thanks

Does anyone have tab, or do I get to transcribe this one?

PP's tutorial manual has one Tientos "A Paso Lento" which incorporates some parts (but certainly not all and perhaps in a more "alleviated" fashion) from Tientos de la Bahia. Perhaps I could send you a PDF copy?

Of course, I (and many others, I am sure) would love tabs for the better Tientos, should you find time to draft them, Chiste.

Chiste de Gales -> RE: Im so bored with JM Tientos! (Oct. 27 2010 20:24:00)

I already have tabs of Paso Lento, but I think Ill just transcribe Bahia.
I like transcribing. Its like solving a puzzle.

Beautiful and healthy old traditions, nearly monastic in the dedication they command. Wonderful, Chiste.
Hopefully, the religiously ascetic inclination revealed by the task you wish to undertake will extend to a charitable proclivity when asked to share the fruit of your work. Believe it or not, coincidentally, I often do and was listening to Tientos de la Bahia, just yesterday, planning on learning it (how to, really). Your query and interest have now re-ignited my desire and commitment –particularly if assisted by your tabs/notation.

So good luck with your exercise, and please keep me (us) in mind,
if you would. [;)]

Ole! Mezzo, I am impressed by how quickly you have learnt to play, you must work hard. I like your torque, you have natural talent; mixed with lots of hard work you'll be great!

It's the only way to go. Everyone should do it, all the time. Give it a shot, GJ.

Very personal experience, including the mistakes we discover later, although videos are a big help in that regard.

For ideas from cante recordings, most singers from Cádiz and Jerez do tientos, so...

Parrilla (with Paquera, Pansequito, Manuel and Dolores Agujetas)
Manuel Morao (Terremoto, Perla, María Vargas)
Cepero (Rancapino, Santiago Donday, Juan Villar, Vicente Soto...)
Moraíto (Torta, Terremoto hijo...)
Diego Carrasco (Tía Anica La Periñaca)

and of course

Paco de Lucía (Camarón, Fosforito, Pepe de Lucía, María Vargas)
Manolo Sanlúcar (Manuel Agujetas).

There's a good tientos on "Rubichis," with Diego Rubichi and his son Domingo.

JasonMcGuire -> RE: Im so bored with JM Tientos! (Oct. 28 2010 18:34:02)

Improvise Chiste like Marco did in the uploads section. Then if you don't like the material, you only have yourself to blame. You could memorize your lines like daytime soap opera actors or you could deliver like Deniro, Brando etc...... for me the choice is clear. Improvisation is the way to go for flamenco.

Chiste de Gales -> RE: Im so bored with JM Tientos! (Oct. 28 2010 19:36:39)

Im with you Rubio, but I have to learn some licks before Im happy with my improvised stuff. I want it to sound right.

Thats how I play solea- First learned Santuario, then added my favorite parts from Bronce Gitano. I put in a couple compasses from Don Ramon, a couple of parts from Conte de Loyo's main accompanist, and only then did I start putting my own material in.

Ive played rock to long to trust myself any other way.

JasonMcGuire -> RE: Im so bored with JM Tientos! (Oct. 28 2010 19:42:47)

There are only 12 pitches. Put them in the blender and hit frappe..... its all rock n' roll brother. Your solea licks should be sufficient fuel for improvising tientos. Phrygian mode is phrygian mode. A drummer can jam in 6/8 or 4/4...... be a drummer.

Some people will say you suck even if you are great and viceaversa. Be happy and take control of your music. No one will do it for you. Its your responsibility. Thats a rock n' roll attitude. Blow **** up, break the rules, have fun, get laid.
