With all the hectic work I am doing and so little time to play or make movies, the creative side of my brain has to make do with still photos. I carry my little camera around with me all the time and this is my fav from this month. I believe Kozz is also taking it up.

Lovely "texture" there, Escribano!

I love Black and White photography as I do pen and ink drawings.

(BTW...is that the pubs coming out at closing time in Bath?) [;)][:D]

Really? I would love to see one. I am trying to get closer with digital to the 35mm black and white I was doing when I was a kid. Had my own darkroom when I was 10 then got a place at Uni to study photojournalism but never went and I regret it to this day.

I did the same!

I used a "pinhole" camera made out of a shoebox and had a cupboard I went into to develop and print the results.

Ah...the smell of developer and "Hypo" fixing baths!

The Brownie 127 was only something to dream about back then!

No...I personally don't do pen and ink drawings, but I know a couple of Aberdeen artists who do and I've always liked that no frills look, just as I love screen prints with sheets of plain colour and Technicolor films.

You see the world with different eyes. In comparison to photographers we walk around with closed eyes. ^^

I remember when I saw your HDR-photos. I downloaded custom firmware for my camera and also took some for HDR. I was so hot to make some pictures.. I told my girlfriend that I would be out for 10 minutes taking some shots of the train station in front of our apartment..
When I was standing there a better place came into my mind..and it was just 1km away. So I went there.. And than..the sun went down and I remembered a building with nice neon.-light.. So I walked there..and so on and so forth..

In the end I walked 5-10km..and had to take a taxi back home.. ^^ Then she asked what I did.. And I said.. eh..just took some photos around the corner.. [:D]

You want to see a budding master of HDR? This is a buddy of mine who just quit his job at Microsoft to follow his passion. He is getting very close to being a pro and a name. I found the location and shot it and then he drove through the night to get it at dawn. It is something else,

Just working my way around Adobe Lightroom...an awesome product, you might like it aswell.

It's on my list along with the Nik bundle for LightRoom but I have to save my pennies first. Thanks for the encouragement. I will be watching your progress on Facebook as you figure it all out as well.

@Richard. Nice photo in Japan. I would download a trial copy of Nik Silver Efex Pro, work with the original colour copy if you have it and see what you can do to bring in the hills from the mist a little. It is an amazing tool for b/w.

I was lucky my gf has a copy of it for the bureau she's working for. First I thought it was only a database management tool, but its so much more.
Yesterday at the Dutch Design Week I got my first assignement for https://www.snurkbeddengoed.nl, and LightRoom became very handy for bulk processing.

Indeed a nice pic Richard, Silver Efex plugin is great...

Are you professionals missing working in a darkroom, or is the digital enviroment a big relief?

I am not a pro but I do not miss the hassle of the darkroom - space, chemicals etc. though I did like working the enlarger and watching the image emerge in the developer. The main advantage of digital is the low cost in film and of course, time.

Though Paul will often spend days working on a photo before he posts his site. I am learning a lot from him and we are going to try for the Royal Photographic Society distinctions together and see if we can get to at least ARPS.

Congrats on the design assignment.

I can imagine you learning a lot, my mind is dazzling sometimes when I read about all the techniques and terms.
But I do understand now better why you like the Efex plugin so much. A little knowledge about photography in the old days is certainly a pro.

Thanks for the tip Escribano. The photo was processed in Photoshop Elements on my laptop. As the new house gets squared away, a good display, a more capable computer and more software are on the list to get.

I'm an ex-darkroom guy myself. And I have thousands of underwater and travel slides I developed myself while living on a remote island in the Pacific.

Silver Efex Pro is a plug-in for Photoshop and also works with Elements so give it a try. The nearest to a digital darkroom I have found for b/w. Scan those slides in :-)

I was thinking about this statement last night and also this morning Simon..

That is why I have been doing so much more since my friend was killed and I am not finished yet.

And in some things, we never learn.

But HDR photos are like a potentially good flamenco recording ruined by overproduction, farting bass, flute, keyboard etc.etc. [:'(]

Completely agree, which is why I don't use it much, after a few experiments. I prefer using the old darkroom techniques adapted to digital.

I am not exactly shure yet, but I think you can safe some pennies to not go for the NIK bundle, but for LightRoom...it almost has it all...
