Odie -> Question about rasgueados? (Oct. 23 2010 10:49:11)

Hi I have question:
I watched some instructional flamenco vids and the guy was doing rasgueados with RH fingers in this order of strumming: 3,2,1.

But I learned to do them in the reverse order a long ago: 1,2,3 - which is more natural to me.

So the question is: am I doing them wrong and should re-learn them really?

Go with natural always . Peace

Relearn it. War.

I would relearn it, You will end up having to do up strokes with the third finger for many combinations.

relearn it. it'll open a lot more doors for you.
remember, every technique is a bit awkward at first.

I say relearn it. I was in the same boat as you, I started backwards like you did. Decided to retrain myself even though it felt really awkward. I'm really glad I did.
Start ASAP! The longer you keep doing it wrong the harder it will be. Some day, probably when you have gotten pretty advanced in other techniques, you will realize you're not happy with your rasgueado sound, and at that point it will be a real pain the ass to go back and change it. It will not happen quickly. Start now.

If you are serious about playing flamenco I'd suggest to relearn it.

I have wasted a lot of time having to relearn technique after spending too long playing what 'came naturally'. Playing what is natural isn't always the best way, it started me off quicker but then I found it limited me and ultimately it has been the long way round.

Observe how you scratch any part of your body obviously and see how your fingers articulate and you would notice that this motion you are doing is the same correct motion for doing tremolo. Classical tremolo that is.... Now try doing air rasgueo the same order as you did in tremolo.

Cool, I'll relearn then.
In fact I have tried it already and it is not that difficult after all.

JasonMcGuire -> RE: Question about rasgueados? (Oct. 28 2010 20:15:38)

learn it the right way. sorry bro. I learned tremolo backwards when I was a kid. I relearned it and the facility of being able to go either direction is liberating. There is no rush to get technique. Enjoy the journey. Thats were the magic is..... not in arriving at the destination.
