AMEN, Ricardo. I don't understand the cult of "faster is better" in picado that many who aspire to play flamenco think is the apex of great playing. It can be, but it is not necessarily so. Too often speed is used as a way to dazzle onlookers, in the way that cheap parlor tricks were once used to amuse house guests.

There is not one single player, who has very very fast picado, but is not able to produce a good tone on the guitar. Ricardo im sure was referring to practicing. For a good (picado) performance i think its redundant to say it should have a good tone.

I think this was quoted once as fast playing but without tone on the forum

I disagree. Look at some youtube videos of that fellow Ruben Diaz... he posts a lot of stuff. He can play some moderately fast picados, but IMO his tone is NOT pleasant to listen to at all.

Yep, no flamenco. Horrible to watch...But it is also called picado. Its just tirando.

HolyEvil -> RE: Fast picados and the pinky (Oct. 21 2010 22:24:43)

yep.. sounds really flimsy... like just brushing against the strings and not ballsy at all..
maybe we can hotlink it as what not to sound like in our practice? [:D]

Unless you are Nunez, your tirando will NEVER sound like picado (apoyando). Its the whole reason why picado (apoyando) exists. Otherwise we could solely use tirando...

ok, that is one example of a guy who plays to just show off, imo. there's no real musicality there.

but i have yet to see an actual flamenco player play "just to show off."

i dont wanna live in a world where being very good at a technique as a result of years of practice is looked down upon

nice point...i agree.

its often very easy for people to insult monster technical ability.
