ok, quick stupid question....
how do you pronounce luthiery/lutheir?

loot-tee-er, loot-tee-ay, looth-thee-er, looth-thee-ay, loot-tuh-ree, looth-tha-ree?

Anders Eliasson -> RE: stupid question (Oct. 19 2010 7:50:13)

I have the same problem, so I dont use the word.[:D]

Since I only build guitars (and boats) I call myself a guitarmaker and what i do is guitarmaking.
Sometimes I call myself other things.[;)]

edguerin -> RE: stupid question (Oct. 19 2010 17:44:33)

According to the New Oxford American Dictionary it's loo-tea-uhr.
According to Merriam-Webster ist can be loo-thee-er.

That's ok, as long as it's you yourself.[;)]

A luthier (pronounced /ljuːˈti.ər/)(I don't know how is that pronounced [8D]) is someone who makes or repairs stringed instruments. The word luthier comes from the French word luth which means "lute".

According to Wikipedia

Sorry, but the talk of "imported" French words made me think of it.

(The "x" is the plural form.)

Bureau is an iconic word in historic Glasgow since it was normally understood to mean The Bureau of Employment which was called "The Buroo".
This strange word used to fascinate us young kids and we couldn't work out why Buroo was spelt that way. [:D]

If you were unemployed, you were "On the Buroo".

It was called different names through the decades, like the Labour Exchange, the Employment Office (which folk always called the "Unemployment Office) and the "slicker" up-to-date "Job Centre", but despite any fashionable Government name changes it was still always known as The Buroo.

I must have been 10 or 11 before found out it was an imported French word and was not actually pronounced Buroo by people outside the Glasgow area.[:D]

cheers,

Ron

ah, i see. thanks for the clarification! there's all these weird anomalies in the english language that just doesn't make sense.

ok here's another one. piano is pronounced pee-ann-no. so why do some people pronounce pianist, peenist like the male organ instead of pee-ann-nist?

"guitarrero"

my spanish is atrocious but i can pronounce that one. [:D]
