Sounds awesome, Andy!! You somehow just moved my Lowden steel string a bit closer to the classifieds [:D]

TANúñez -> RE: Brand new handmade Negra (Oct. 4 2010 22:02:55)

Beautiful work Andy and the sound to match.

Andy Culpepper -> RE: Brand new handmade Negra (Oct. 4 2010 22:39:21)

Thanks a lot guys. ralexander, those Lowdens look great, but I can guarantee this guitar feels better on a rasgueado [:)]

sig -> RE: Brand new handmade Negra (Oct. 7 2010 15:21:49)

Andy,
Wow another great instrument! I'd love to have this Negra but my budget just couldn't handle it this year. Maybe next year?? :))

I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great handmade instrument to consider this one. I recently purchased Andy's #4 Cedar Top Blanca and I coudn't have been happier. It has a nice clear voice and remains clear and cutting even when you push it hard. Great low action with just enough buzz plus its super lightweight. Overall a great guitar!
Sig--

Thanks Arash I appreciate that.

Hey guys.
Just got back home, thanks for your comments.
Thanks nealf, I've been building about 94 mm at the tail end to 89 mm at the heel.
I usually use D'addario trebles and labella basses. All mediums.

Thanks romb. I did the audio with a cheap little Sony ECM-MS907 stereo condenser mic. Recorded straight into Amadeus pro on my laptop. There is no reverb or other effects on this sound at all.

Thanks a lot Kris, I'll let you know if I ever make it down to the Southern hemisphere.

Anthony, lol, thanks bro I'll take that as a compliment.[:D]

Andy Culpepper -> RE: Brand new handmade Negra- price reduced (Nov. 4 2010 23:17:41)

Man I guess it is tough to sell a negra around here.

I'm going to drop this one down to $2000 or equivalent in wine and chickens.

Seriously. I want somebody to get a good deal here.

Andy Culpepper -> RE: Brand new handmade Negra (Dec. 18 2010 23:07:49)

I want to sell this one this month. How about $1700. Negotiable. Pm me...

You're becoming a fine luthier friend =)

GuitarVlog -> RE: Brand new handmade Negra (Dec. 19 2010 2:10:55)

Marvelous looking negra! And the sound sample is delicious!
[:)]

Did you base it on any particular design? A Conde? A Reyes?

Ay-yay. Why did my mechanic have to find so many problems with my car this week? I depleted my guitar savings account.

Hi,

Having just found a way again into youtube ( censored over here ), I had the pleasure to check out your recording.

From what is to be heard I am almost certain that this instrument turned out exceptionally well, especially for a builder who is supposed to have not built many guitars yet. I suppose that whoever will be buying this one to be making a true bargain.
And also like to applaud your playing!

Provided that you trust me being positive and you simultaneously being open for critics, I would like to consider two imperfect points.

The first is that for evaluation of a guitar it should not be recorded this way. Close-up, let alone immediate miking like in this case will be misrepresenting the actual sonic conditions.
Unless the guitar was to be grossly boomy ( drowning in LF ), such a close microphone position will let everything appear huge, with no notion on realistic performance in a room.

For a telling track you need to seek decent acoustics ( find best position in the room to avoid build-up of mid to low frequencies, then position the microphone at best spot you can find for to omitt close reflections as much as possible ) and place the microphone at least 1,5 meters if not farther away from the guitar.
That way it will capture how specially the bass will develop outside the instrument, which is what counts live.

Also, as one of the great challenges is being the trebles ( and their volume progression up the neck ), including the upper registers is required to get a better overview on the instruments sound property.

Please keep in mind that this is no way meant to put down your certainly justified joy about this guitar born through your own hands work.

I am sure that you will actually welcome any hint that helps making representative sound clips.

My congrats on your luthiery, and wishing many succesful builds,

Ruphus

Andy Culpepper -> RE: Brand new handmade Negra (Dec. 19 2010 15:32:14)

Thanks everyone who commented. It's a 5-fan bracing pattern with 2 angled cutoffs a la Barbero. But I work the top a little differently than Barbero (at least the one I have plans for)..I take it thinner at the edge.
The action is 3.1 mm low E, 2.7 mm high E.

Ruphus, I hear what you are saying. I don't have a good room in my house for recording, but I'll look into it. I will try to record something else that demonstrates the whole range of the guitar.

Andy Culpepper -> RE: Brand new handmade Negra (Dec. 21 2010 18:06:12)

sold.

Samarto -> RE: Brand new handmade Negra (Dec. 21 2010 23:23:22)

Glad to see someone bought it. Nice guitar at a steal.

Ruphus -> RE: Brand new handmade Negra (Dec. 22 2010 17:14:36)

Apparently way above of what one usually finds at retailers in such a price range.

Maybe the buyer will post some feedback on how it compares for him with either common shelf level ( the average factory products you get for around 2 grands ), or other shop instruments.
