por medio -> Another picado question.... (Sep. 22 2010 6:19:19)

I've hit a wall on picado bursts.

I can do fairly good runs, especially when warmed up. But doing short bursts of four to six notes - even around 150bpm - I lose control, stiffen up, or go too fast. In fact I could probably do a better and fast run than these bursts.

I feel that I've got some issues when I change techniques, since it's very obvious if I attempt to do these bursts when I've been doing other techniques, say rasgeos, for ages. It's as if I need to "condition" the fingers into picados again. Once I practice the same bursts for a few times it's much better again.

What would be a good practice routine or method for this? I think it does have quite a bit to do with my mental block too ('oh sh*t picado burst coming up!') and I just lose coordination.

Maybe I'm just too impatient.

Thank you for all your help!

Make a looped rhythmic groove out of only the transition points of the technique. The groove need not be "in compas" but it has to be in some sort of steady groove rhythm. Like when going from arps to picado just that part pick say 6 notes of each part and loop it as triplets or something, even it was supposed to be 16ths.

Ah that's a great idea to practice. Thanks Ricardo!
