So the other day I was reading the introduction to a book I have on Flamenco and the author stated that gypsies are extremely fond of dressing in their Sunday best when going to penas (or perhaps in general?). Is this true? I need to know these kinds of things for when I travel to Spain (hopefully sometime soon!). Should I bring the suit?[8D]

I read this post out to Emilio Maya who laughed and laughed, probably because at that moment he was wearing jeans and an old jumper, but we agreed it is true, the flamencos and Gitanos in general, dress up, they like to be elegant, it's their style and respecting that goes a long way.

Emilio generously gave my partner Harold ( who produced Emilio's CD) a very smart suit for his birthday, now all Harold lacks is the hat and cane [;)]

Speaking of Emilio Maya, I live in Seattle and went to Rafael de Utrera's concert (was it last September?? Time sure flies!). I was extremely dissapointed because I thought Emilio would be there! Leon was good, but I thought Emilio was going to play.[:(] Tell him he needs to come back to Seattle some time. (Who was the guitarist sitting in for him?)

Hi Sean,
I have no idea who stood in for Emilio, often the reviews I read of that tour just said it was Emilio playing even though it wasn't. The tour manager told me people asked after Emilio every town they went so hopefully this will help us arrange a US tour for Emilio and his group. It was a shame but about a week before they were due to go there were no contracts nor visas so Emilio did not go. I think in the end Rafa picked up a US guitarist and dancer.

The first time I went to Andalucia, many years ago, I remember reading something about ...
"Apart from the big cities such as Madrid and Barcelona, it would be considered unwise to travel to the more rural regions of Spain unless you consider your dress code.
Andalucians, especially the Gitano population are well known for their pride and dignity, and despise and disrespect foreigners, who have long hair, beards, and a generally unkempt "hippy" appearance.
Beards, especially if long and unkempt are considered "Barbaric" dating back to the times when the Moors occupied Andalucia until their final expulsion".

So when did this beards and long hair thing start amongst the Flamencos then?

I remember being totally amazed on seeing the "Sevillanas" film, with a fully bearded Camaron and a shoulder lengthed haired Tomatito.

I know that there was a big culture change all over Spain when Franco died.
So is that when this culture change took place or what?

Maybe someone can fill me in on this, would be interesting to know.
