Tony el Despeinao, a teacher in London teaches a bulerias falseta that he learned from him way back when. Friend of mine John learnt it from him and whenever we hear it we go "wow that's amazing!". It's well funky, but you've gotta get the rhythm exact or it just comes out like a mess [&:][&:]

Other than that I don't know anything about him either. He on youtube?

Marote was one of the best ever!
I expect Norman may have something to say, but for now here are a couple of articles that tell you something about him:

INTERVIEW WITH JUAN MAYA 'MAROTE'. Guitarist.

Obituary. Juan Santiago Maya 'Marote'

His playing was very powerful, and it's a real pity that there is not much of it available on record. If you look in the right places you can find the album he did in 1970 called "El Cante de Fernanda y Bernarda de Utrera" which is amazing.
(And if you can't find it, drop me a line and I'll point you in the right direction [;)])

You can see more links to the right of this video.

I have a zambra and granaina as guitar solos. I have two recordings of bulerias with Ramon de algeciras, a solea and siguirillas too and scratchy recordings. Pm me with your email.

Why is this in the "Off Topic" section? Can it be moved into "General"?

Ailsa, he was from Granada. An amazing player. he had been very popular and had left as many from here do, to go live in Madrid. In his later years he returned and seemed to be forgotton. I was very fortunate to meet him, he was a gentleman and always dressed very dapper and very gitano with his hat, cape and stick. It was very sad when he became ill and passed on.

Thanks Estevan for the info on his album with Fernanda and Bernarda. Would love to get that.

Here are some MP3s with Marote. According to this discography, he plays on the first seven tracks. Unfortunately five of them are just dance accompaniment with the two guitars, so it's mostly a lot of noise. But there are two solos, (the soleá, which opens with a reference to Albéniz, and the granaínas) where you can really hear him.
