I have a couple of rumba patterns that i use that accent the 4. Whenever you hear the pattern where the player is using thumb golpes (above the strings) I hear an accent on the 2, 2 AND, and 4. Example: 1: golpe only, ring and middle AND: index upstroke 2: thumb golpe only AND: thumb golpe and downstroke with middle 3: nothing AND: index upstroke 4: thumb golpe and downstroke with middle AND: index upstroke I hit that 4 pretty hard. I'm not sure of the terminology, but you also hear a lot of rumba players striking downwards withe the ring and middle fingers and while muting with the side of their hand. It creates a snappy percussive sound that often falls on the 4.
