Anybody have a nice Rumba rhythm where the accent is on the 4 count? Any links with some good demonstration or recommendations much appreciated. Thanks!

Hey Cathulu, Im actually working on JMs Rumba del dia nueve. Not sure if you know it or if its what you mean, but its a nice little rumba and I just now can play it properly. I hope to upload this week.

Do you mean just strumming? Or a full piece?

Vic

If you're talking about strumming patterns, check out my YouTube channel. I have 10 videos entitled "Rumba Strum 01" through "Rumba Strum 10" which might help you out.

Brilliant, I was planning on doing some rhythm work this week! Thanks Ramzi el Rumbero [:)]

Ok, what I mean is the strong accent on what would be the 4 count if you count in a fast 4/4 time (I got that from another video I watched) or perhaps better said on the "2 and" in 2/4 which is what I should have said - like this example here

Am I making sense? I need a change in rhythm! My strum/slap is on the "2" count and I need to shift it over 1/2 beat.

Anybody ever heard of the Lorier family in these videos? Not much about them I can find out...

el Rumbero, I will check your youtube page.

You should try doing the slap on 3:

1 - thumb down with golpe
& - thumb up
2 - iam down
& - thumb up
3 - mute / slap strings, or dont play anything
& - i up
4 - i down
& - i up

or

1 - slap / mute
& - iam up
2 - iam down
& - thumb up
3 - slap / mute
& - iam up
4 - iam down
& - thumb up

But yeah, definatley check out Ramzis vids, he has some great stuff there!

Do you have a sample of someone on youtube or somewhere using that strum? I would like to hear it... That is a bit different strum to what I am thinking...

Actually, I think your 3 is my 2... which is what I want to move away from...

1 = 1
and = 2
2 = 3
and = 4
1 = 1
and = 2
2 = 3
and = 4
etc

I checked el Rumbero and he has what I am looking for... thanks Ramzi!

Edit here is Ramzi playing what I am talking about

I found this:

cathulu -> RE: Rumba on the 4 count? (Sep. 12 2010 23:35:56)

Edit, yes, see my earlier post. Your video example is similar to the way I play and is the accent on the three = the two [:D].

I want to slide over to the "4". Thanks for the clairification

PS Vic, I look forward to your Rumba upload! I haven't heard of Rumba del dia Nueve - I will look and listen for it! My Rumba which is my cross to bear as I try and learn it is Inspiration. It has some fast picado...

Hey, just listened to it, a nice Rumba - where did you find the tab for it?

fevictor -> RE: Rumba on the 4 count? (Sep. 13 2010 0:00:04)

yeah that's the one. I have Juan Martins 0-5 lesson book, and I got it from there. I can send you the tab and mp3 if you ever want it.

I'm hoping maybe to upload it this week to see what you think.

fevictor -> RE: Rumba on the 4 count? (Sep. 13 2010 0:03:13)

just out of curiosity, where have you heard the accent on the 4, like muting the strings? Or are you just looking to mix things up? It may sound funny...I normally hear the accents on 1 and 3, and my foot always naturally taps these 2 particular beats.

James Ashley Mayer -> RE: Rumba on the 4 count? (Sep. 13 2010 16:13:25)

I have a couple of rumba patterns that i use that accent the 4.

Whenever you hear the pattern where the player is using thumb golpes (above the strings) I hear an accent on the 2, 2 AND, and 4.

Example:

1: golpe only, ring and middle
AND: index upstroke
2: thumb golpe only
AND: thumb golpe and downstroke with middle
3: nothing
AND: index upstroke
4: thumb golpe and downstroke with middle
AND: index upstroke

I hit that 4 pretty hard.

I'm not sure of the terminology, but you also hear a lot of rumba players striking downwards withe the ring and middle fingers and while muting with the side of their hand. It creates a snappy percussive sound that often falls on the 4.
