Downing -> 12 best CDs of all-time? (Jan. 4 2005 19:42:32)

This is sort of a spinoff of Kate's post regarding the 12 best flamenco CDs of 2004, which I noted did not spark a lot of interest but I thought I would ask anyway since I'm looking to build my CD collection.

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Think of it as if you were stuck on a desert island. Which CDs would you want to have and why?

Escribano -> RE: 12 best CDs of all-time? (Jan. 4 2005 20:30:48)

Only 3 from me (in no order):

1. Camarón (with Tomatito) - Paris 1987
2. Capullo De Jerez - En Directo
3. Ziryab - PDL

1. Tomas Pavon: el Mantentiel del Cante Gitano, El Correo. Recopilacion, 2001?
2. Juan Villar: Juanito de la Gineto, Polydor, 1972
3. Terremoto de Jerez: Chante du Monde, vol 4. Recopilacion.

Then, of course, what about Maria Callas?[;)]

I'm going to follow you up on those, Sean; knowing your tastes, I won't go far wrong[;)]

Downing,
from the guitar side of things, I would say

1. Manolo Sanlucar -- Tauromagia
2. Vicente Amigo -- El Ciudad de las Ideas
3. Paco de Lucia -- Almoraima

These are basically guitar CDs, although they have cante, bands, and even symphonic stuff. But they are all absolutely killer CDs!

Downing -> RE: 12 best CDs of all-time? (Jan. 4 2005 23:18:17)

Miguel: Yes, I was asking about the guitar side of things. Thanks for clarifying that.

Nothing by Paco Pena? That's kind of surprising.

So far, I've got only one of the above: El Ciudad de las Ideas. I'm surprised PdL's Siroco didn't make anyone's list.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Now to try to find them at my local music store...

1. Vicente Amigo--De Mi Corazon Al Aire
2. Ramon Jimenez--Sembrando Inquietudes (everyone should really check this one out!)
3. Moraito--Morao y Oro

TANúñez -> RE: 12 best CDs of all-time? (Jan. 5 2005 2:11:22)

1. Luzia - PdL
2. Tauromagia - Manolo Sanlucar
3. Rosas del Amor - Tomatito

Then again, if I were to be stuck on a desert island I'd rather have my guitar. Batteries can only last so long. Then what good would these CD's be? [:D]

Until your strings break!

True [;)] At which time I'd make a flute from a tree trunk to keep me busy while I make my strings from the leaves of palm trees or the guts of any wild animals that may be around [:D]

Conrad -> RE: 12 best CDs of all-time? (Jan. 5 2005 3:59:50)

Hey! I like seangregory20's choices. Ramon Jimenez is terribly underrated. Whoo, Nice pick!

I'm not gonna bother with a full list of my guitar favourites, because I would just get completely carried away.

However, Siroco is the most essential disc in any collection. Utterly sublime. Chilling.

Here are some of my Cante picks:

-Camaron's "Potro de Rabia y Miel"
-Camaron's Paris with Tomate
-Diego Cigala "Live with Nino Josele" (the buleria is worth the price)
-Potito's "Mia Pa Los Restos" (check this one out!!!!!)
-Duquende ya la Guitarra de Tomatito
-Guadiana's Brillo de Luna (my newest discovery, wicked) / Also check out the Alegria from his other album "Cuando el río suena".
-Jose Merce's "Del Amanecer" with Vicente Amigo
-Duquende's "Samaruco" (crazy new melodies and ideas from Paco de Lucia and Duquende)
-Miguel Poveda's "Zaguan"

Remember to PLAY IT LOUD!

PDL: Fuente y Caudal
Tomatito: Guitarra Gitana
G Nuñez: Cant remember the name, but that one with the absolute killer granaina.

Besides that, Manolo Caracol con Melchor de Marchena, Chocolate con Niño Ricardo El Agujetas con Parilla de Jerez y La Niña de los Peines. These CD's with cante will teach much more flamenco than more or less any guitar heroe CD.

Nice listening

Guest -> RE: 12 best CDs of all-time? (Jan. 5 2005 17:34:42)

12, ok. How about 6 guitar and 6 cante to be fair?

3.Tauromagia-Manolo Sanlucar
4.Jucal-Nunez
5.Vivencias Imaginadas-V. Amigo
6.Paseo de los Castanos-Tomatito

1.Maria Vargas con Paco de Lucia
2.Indio Gitano con Gerardo Nunez
3.Luis el Zambo con Moraito
4.Camaron-Nuestra
5.Terremoto hijo-Cosa Natural
6.La Paquera-anything
