Dear all,

Any way to convert these "protected" old VHS tapes to DVDs?

beno -> RE: Encuentro VHS -> DVD (Sep. 2 2010 13:11:35)

just buy a TV card, connect the VCR to the PC and digitalize it with a program like pinnacle TV center or so...
altough I have compatibility problems with these pinnacle-thing under windows 7[&:]

Hi Mike,

Have you tried just making a copy either on an ordinary DVD Recorder with combined VHS player/recorder?

You can't really "protect" analog tape.

Disney used to play around with the sync pulses on their films so that they would just be adequate to sync a TV set, but would cause sync/timing/tracking errors on a video recorder trying to record the video signal.

I don't think a DVD recorder would be fooled though?

Haven't tried it.

cheers,

Ron

The first minutes are recorded ok but after a while it gets out of sync depending on how long the recording is the lag can be about a minute.

Can you describe what's happening in more detail, Mike?

Not if you are making a DVD of your own VHS tape.

cheers,

Ron

It seems that there's a bottleneck somewhere where the video gets stuck. Audio seems to be written to disk easily but video lags behind and the picture quality sucks.

It's my own VHS, I swear. [:D]

Ron.M -> RE: Encuentro VHS -> DVD (Sep. 2 2010 14:18:20)

Hmmm...I can't see why the picture and sound would go out of sync?

VHS protection usually plays around with the vertical sync/blanking to confuse the recorder causing a crappy picture going too light and too dark.

It's been about 10 years since I played around with it, but I could make a fairly decent copy just by changing a capacitor value in the recording VCR's AGC circuit.

(The reason I wanted to make a backup is because Disney tapes cost about £14-£16 even 10 years ago and kids can spill juice on them or they got chewed up in the machine....so I let my daughter have the copy and kept the "master" safe.)

I had a look on the net and indeed DVD recorders ARE affected too...but I see there are a number of solutions available costing only $30-$40.

You could probably pull the same capacitor trick, but you would need to get the service manual or circuits and experiment a bit.

cheers,

Ron

Somewhat related question - do Encuentro offer their old videos on DVD now or are those still tape?

beno -> RE: Encuentro VHS -> DVD (Sep. 2 2010 18:10:53)

well, if the sound is slippin just put it in the right place with some editor/cut program: pinnacle studio, sony vegas or whatever....or did You try that as well?

Ricardo -> RE: Encuentro VHS -> DVD (Sep. 2 2010 20:18:03)

I was able to copy VHS from the TV RCA cables out (white red and yellow cables) into a digital hi8 hand held camcorder. That was better then going from the outputs of the VCR player itself, which DOES have the copy protection. Make sure to monitor on the hand held to make sure it is coming through all good. From there you have to import the video to the computer that allows you to make movies. Then burn to DVD. Easy, but takes time.

Ricardo

Ron.M -> RE: Encuentro VHS -> DVD (Sep. 2 2010 20:22:12)

Yeah..right Ricardo!

Sometimes TV sets re-export the "video in" NOT just as a copy it received, but the electronics shapes it up first and removes all of that interference stuff before sending it out again.

Not all sets do though, it depends on the internal design, so you just have to try it and see.

cheers,

Ron

Florian -> RE: Encuentro VHS -> DVD (Sep. 3 2010 6:25:38)

or get a media player...it has the option to record anything...live tv, dvds, vhs...whatever u wanna record just use the rca cables and instead of plugging onto the tv plug into media player and that sends it to tv...but its also able to record whatever you are sending though

Have you tried copying a protected VHS this way?

Pimientito -> RE: Encuentro VHS -> DVD (Sep. 4 2010 8:44:26)

The shops here are selling the VHS versions of the Encuentro courses very cheap. You can pick up the videos for around 10 Euros. I think most of them are available on DVD now.

Including the book for €10?

Pimientito -> RE: Encuentro VHS -> DVD (Sep. 5 2010 19:40:26)

The book is another 30 euros I think but it still works out considerably cheaper.
