Miguel de Maria -> Tom Cruise! (Jan. 2 2005 3:30:44)

I watched Tom Cruise on Actor's Studio a few days ago. For those who don't know, this is a program that takes celebrated actors on a stage and interviews them for a couple of hours. I was very impressed by Tom Cruise. As he told his story, the continual theme in his life was his incredible work ethic, attention to detail, and high standards. When he takes a script, he works with a team to rewrite it over months or years to suit his own vision. The amount of research he does is also incredible; for the Color of Money he played pool for 10-12 hours a day, training with an ex-champion pool player. The player said that by the time the movie was over, Cruise could have probably gone on the pro circuit!

What has struck me, is that not just Tom Cruise, but also Barbara Streisand and Kevin Spacey, other successful actors; as well as people like basketball players Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan; football coaches like Andy Reid, Bill Parcells, and Bill Bellicheck, all incredibly successful; and of course musicians like Paco de Lucia, all share this singular drive, an obsession for getting the details right, a perfectionism, and a work ethic most would describe as pathological! These factors are all there, across the board, in all of them!

So it seems that the secret to great success, in any field, is right there to see.

Just what do you think you're doing, writing all that? Go practise [;)]

Don't ask, but I watched Top Gun on tv last night. Not sure he was doing it that way then, probably not enough influence. I love the air combat dialogue "turning left!", "We're too close, I'm switching to guns!", "firing now!"

Still, the views of San Diego and La Jolla were great, along with Kelly's little 50's Porsche cabriolet and the 80s soundtrack.

Yeah, lest we forget Kenny Logins...[:@][&:]

And the main Top Gun instrumental theme is played on electric guitar by Steve Stevens, who discovered flamenco via Paco de Lucia a few years ago and made his "Flamenco a go go" album. So we come full circle with the Tom Cruise/flamenco connection.

Cool, that's only two degrees of separation[:D] And Miramar (Fighter Town USA) is Spanish right,[;)] Though, technically, Top Gun school moved to Colorado a while back and Miramar hosts Marine heavy lifters now.
