Andy Culpepper -> New rosette design (Aug. 24 2010 21:33:19)

Hey all,
I decided to go for a bold look with this rosette, destined for a negra I think. The green is quite electric. Has anybody else noticed how "side grain" (bands) veneer color really pops out more than "end grain" (mosaic, usually)?
Anyhow let me know what you think about it[:)]

Beautiful rosette! Did you make it yourself?

Escribano -> RE: New rosette design (Aug. 25 2010 10:59:00)

Lovely, if you make these yourself any chance of some photos of the rosette construction? It'a always fascinated me but I have not seen it documented very well.

orsonw -> RE: New rosette design (Aug. 25 2010 13:16:36)

Beautiful.

HemeolaMan -> RE: New rosette design (Aug. 25 2010 14:20:56)

I quite like that!

Andy Culpepper -> RE: New rosette design (Aug. 25 2010 22:18:30)

Thanks a lot guys! I did make it myself.

Escribano -> RE: New rosette design (Aug. 25 2010 22:47:48)

Thanks, but next time you're going to have to take a photo of every step, with arrows and labels and everything - for our archives [8|]

Have you seen this: http://www.connorguitars.com/links_tips/rosettes.html

I think Grisha has one of these Connor guitars...

lol that's EXACTLY how I do it myself. I deleted my whole blah blah blah

Graham_B -> RE: New rosette design (Aug. 26 2010 5:38:25)

I really like the design[:)]
Superb workmanship by the way

krichards -> RE: New rosette design (Aug. 26 2010 7:53:54)

I like this too.

Are you producing a unique rosette for each guitar?

Or are you aiming to settle on a favourite and stick with it. Thats the approach I favour, so it becomes part of your 'signature'

Ailsa -> RE: New rosette design (Aug. 26 2010 10:07:48)

That's a great link showing the process. Now that I've seen how it's done I can say with even more conviction:

Brilliant work Andy. I really like the vibrant green.

Thanks, I hadn't seen that.

Looking at photos of your guitars I can see your workmanship is very good. Am I right to think you have a woodworking background?

Andy Culpepper -> RE: New rosette design (Aug. 27 2010 21:07:20)

Thanks krichards. I'm still in an experimenting phase, wanting to try new things on each guitar. We'll see how long that lasts... Some day I may settle on a signature design. Love your rosette btw.

Thanks a lot Ailsa!

Thanks MK. Before guitarmaking I was a carpenter/house painter but never fine stuff like this.

kozz -> RE: New rosette design (Aug. 30 2010 11:46:02)

Nice work!
How long does it take to inlay a rosette?

I asume you make the laminations somewhere inbetween when you have to wait for something.

Andy Culpepper -> RE: New rosette design (Aug. 31 2010 0:21:52)

Thanks kozz,
Yep I do an hour here, an hour there in the downtimes. For something like this about 4-5 hours or so.

Wow, thats quite some work/time.

Are the laminated pieces of some fixed size like 1x1x6 cm?
And how do you calculated the tapering?
Any matching capo's for the future?

(ok sorry, to many questions[:)])

Andy Culpepper -> RE: New rosette design (Sep. 1 2010 12:53:19)

No prob Kozz,
Depending on the size of the tile, my veneer stacks could be like 2 cm wide by 20 cm long, and the height is whatever the height of the tile is.

For the taper you basically figure out your inside and outside circumference of the tile channel, and take the difference between those two. Divide that by how many tiles you will need to fill the circle and that's how much you have to taper each one. I think it was like .7 mm in this case...

mrMagenta -> RE: New rosette design (Sep. 1 2010 17:55:11)

Bold yet stylish and tasteful. Nice choice of colors!

Thanks for the info Deteresa!
Seems like a very fun part to play around with.
Could you make some Space Invader characters? Its kinda funny, but I like that [:D]

Do you also make capo's from those vineers? Could bring up some nice figures.

Anyway I like your design. (I was photoshopping the red bindings in some green how it would look like...looks fresh)

lol yeah, anything pixelated will work great actually. Let me know when you want to order your custom guitar [:)]

Might be fun to make a matching capo if somebody wants that ever..

Actually I think the Space Invader capo would be kinda cool even if I'd be a little scared to do it on the actual guitar

Thanks mrM!

Who knows! You definetly have no problems selling yours as far as I understand.
You are up to No3 now?

4-5 hours? Amazing. I think it would take me 4-5 months...

Very nice work, love it.

lol, nice one kozz. That would be an ambitious project as you'd have to make 3 different critter tiles.
