This sort of thing was apparently fairly popular in the late 16th and early 27th centuries. Dowland and other Elizabethan composers wrote pieces "for two to play upon one lute".

I have seen reproduced a coupe of paintings of a handsome young Elizabethan blade with his arms around a pretty young girl seated on his lap, the two of them playing a single lute. Looked like fun.
