I just got an email from www.esflamenco.com which announced their top 12 CDs for 2004, I dont know if these are their favourites, their readers favourites or their best sellers but there were some surprises there. Emilio did not make it but as we are not selling at esflamenco I am not surprised. However the compilation album Flamenco Chill In which has one of Emilio's tracks ( remixed and remastered by trendy producers so it is totally out of compás with a wierd piano track on top ) made it to the top 12 . No doubt Emilio will be thrilled , not [8D] What does everyone else think. In no particular order as far as I can tell the list includes Tomatito, Paco de Lucia, La Niña Pastori, Arcangel, Jose Merce. Montse Cortes, Juan Carlos Romero, Jeronimo, El Barrio, Flamenco Chill in and Flamenco Jazz. I'm surprised not to see Son de la Frontera. Any one else see anything obvious missing ? Kate

It's a good thing some flamencos are more tolerant of foreigners than some foreigners are of rumba...

Miguel Perhaps you could explain what you mean to say. Selu himself says El Barrio is not flamenco, he is a cantante, , not a cantaor and it is a group of his compositions (nor do they play rumbas). Flamenco Chill played here in the summer and demonstrated a lamentable lack of technique and musicality, neither music nor chill. Flamenco Jazz has good musicians but have a lot to do with Jazz Andaluz and little or nothing to do with flamenco. They dont play rumbas either. I have heard the Gipsy Kings live: they are absolutely great. So what are you talking about??? Sean

Sean, I just don't see where the attitude comes from to denigrate certain artists in this fashion. Although Kate has the priviledge to be a part of a traditional flamenco scene, it seems she doesn't feel the need to insult expressions of flamenco that are not in accord with her taste. Tolerance of other "takes" on the music shows maturity and self-confidence. We have Spaniards who embrace foreigners and allow them to share in Spanish life and flamenco, but then there are foreigners who turn up their nose to elements they consider foreign to flamenco? The Rolling Stones? I don't think it's funny...

Yes Nunez' new album was some of the best flamenco guitar I have heard on CD in a long time. Even stuck in some Escudero to balance out his salsa/jazz tunes. That one and Paco's CD I have listened to repeatedly this year. Tomatito was pretty boring comparing to his last offering IMO. I saw Arcangel live this summer in Lebrija and he was great, so he can stay!

Hi Karenanne, I see you made it over here from flamenco-teacher, good we need more women on this site I think that's four of us here now [:D] I just saw that deflamenco.com are also doing a best of 2004 and are asking people to vote. They put up suggestions as well and Son de la Frontera is mentioned, as is Emilio's CD Temple, and another of our recordings Almanjáyar by the pianist Pablo Rubén Maldonado is suggested for the best instrumental. So we're happy [;)] Kate

Good news re: Son de la Frontera and thanks for the welcome, Kate. I only just found this forum and currently can't get back into Flamenco teacher since the changes. (I think its due to my complete IT stupidity) I always look forward to reading your posts here - and there - am always surprised that there are so few women when there are so many women dancers. I think they (the male guitarists) need us or they would be constantly lost in discussions about strings and guitar makes. (Tongue in cheek comment - for any male string obsessed guitarist about to shoot me!!) Karenanne

Karenanne Yes well they do spend a lot of time talking about their nails and strings but am used to it being surrounded by guitarists all the time. I think we have four women on the group, you, me , Estela and Emma. I'm not a guitarist nor a dancer. I run a flamenco record label and also manage various flamenco artists, like Emilio Maya, Ana Calí, in Granada. My partners a record producer and we have a studio here. Anyway it would be nice to have more women on board and also more dancers, just to balance it out. Kate
