Hi All!

Does anybody know, if there is a connection between flamenco and Gipsy Jazz from Django Reinhart -Hot club the france-( also called European Jazz.) ?

Did Django ever meet gipsy's from Andalusia or more likely the gipsy's from the south of france ( the camarque) ?

Is there something known about this?

Have a nice new year!

Peter.

Well the connection, sorry to be obvious is Gypsy, Django was a Manouche but they travelled all over Europe as well, presumably especially the musicians. The Marie de Mer Gypsy Festival celebrating the Gypsy Virgin in the South of France draws Gypsies from all over Europe. Without a doubt Django was aware of flamenco and the Gitanos of Spain.

Yeah, the manouches are definitely aware of flamenco. I heard one of them explicitly compare the rotating movement of their right hand while doing the pompe manouche to the way 'Spanish guitarists' do it.

Also, isn't their a connection to their rumba-culture? Not sure of this.

You are going down the rumba Catalan, Gypsy Kings route with this, I think. The theory is that gypsies - coming via Greece and Italy, brought the rumba with them to Catalonia. Not sure if this is the Manouche that ended up in the Camargue?
