Armando -> example of innovation in ancient luthery (Jul. 31 2010 14:37:15)

Hy

Last week i have visited the Stradivari museum in Cremona, Italy. Besides a lot of violin family instruments built by ancient creomonese violin makers there was one totally out of the normal. It was a violin built by Pietro Grulli anno 1898. This violin was certainly kind of the Warlock model of the violins of his age. I was pretty much surprised about that instrument.

check it out:

So this is really a somewhat strange but also nice example of innovation in luthery.

regards

Armando

He has tried to imitate the shape of a 1/8th note.

You have a good eye Mike. That didn't even occur to me until you mentioned it.

Graaaazie graaaazie John! That's because I do 1000's of unsuccessful imitations on a weekly basis myself. [:D]

ANCIENT?
What are you trying to make me feel old?
Thats only 112 years ago

No, no, no – you're all wrong. Here's the purpose of that shape. If a critic writes an unfavorable review of a violinist, the violinist uses that claw to slash the critic, then bashes him in the head with that little bout on the end. [:D][:D][:D]

more than likely a practice instrument rather than a concert one.

Love this - Pietro Grulli - working in Cremona around 1883 - died there in 1898. It's almost a fore-runner of some of the electric violins made nowadays. Someone put this up earlier in the thread. Could be a version of a dance masters "kit" and definately as mentioned before,(Hemeola man) not a concert instrument. I love the way he made the chin rest into part of the acoustic body. Very interesting and thanks.
