a? you must mean m - it depends on the notes and where you have to change strings, but where it doesn't matter i always start with m...most tabs will tell you to start with i though and often i find those runs unplayable that way...

You should practice starting with one or the other finger until both ways feel just about the same. Because of the way the fingers are arranged on the hand, it's easier to change to a lower string with the index and a higher string with the middle (or ring). But if you pay close attention, you'll find a way to use rest strokes to avoid unnecessary motion and, with practice, the two ways will start to feel just about the same. Sometimes with a short picado it's obvious that one way is better than another, but IMO it's best to do exercises both ways. If you look carefully at real music (not exercises), you'll find plenty of examples where you end up having to do the string changes both ways in the same picado.

It becomes obvious in descending runs. Here are some specific exercises (starts on Exercise 3):

I usually start with m but I practice a string changing technique as a safeguard against starting wrong.

I'll change strings during picado two ways:

1-Using different fingers of the right hand to pluck the different strings involved (uninterrupted alternating i m pattern)

2-or dragging the same finger in the act of plucking a string then the next lower string.

If I start my picado wrong, all I have to do is use my string change method 2 and it gets the alternating i,m pattern back on track.

I certainly do!!![&:]

thats kind of what I have ended up doing.
I find if its some picado into arpeggios or other way round it not always economic to start with m, so i guess its just a matter of, like u say, being able to use both as and when.

isn't the idea not which finger you start with, but to play on the beat with m?

so if you start off the beat you use i, but on the beat with m

HemeolaMan -> RE: which finger do you start picado with?? (Aug. 1 2010 17:27:08)

whichever works best for the application....

It doesnt matter.

That's EXACTLY right. Except, the exact opposite finger.[;)][:D]

But serious be aware which finger is on the beat. Triplets are good exercise for alternation as you change the finger that carries the beat each time.

why i on the beat? why not m? (and btw i'm asking out of genuine open-minded interest and inquiry, not because i want to argue about it).

i was pointing out to Stu his teacher's idea is a bit more than just "start with m" - i think i'm right in so far as i'm putting forward his teacher's idea, even if you disagree with the idea!

That was not my point. Point was you are right about A finger needs to be ON the beat and good to be aware which that is, not necessarily the STARTING or even ending finger, and that affects the alternation of the phrase as a whole, but which finger it actually is is not relevant. Hence my triplets example. Hope that clears it.

Ricardo
