i´ve had three lessons this week with Jesús Agarrado (El Guardia) in jerez and they were excellent. they really cleared up alot of questions i had for cante accomp and jesus showed me quite a few falsetas as well.

he is very generous with both his time and his knowledge. today i brought my fiancee joanne along to the class to play some irish fiddle and he was delighted to hear it and was very interested.

all in all, jesus is a great (and patient) teacher and if you get the opportunity to take lessons in jerez i would highly recommend it.

oh and a big thanks to Norman Kliman for organising the meeting and first class. [:)]

Thanks for posting that H, it's good to share recommendations because there are so many guitar teachers in Jerez it's really hard to know who to choose, especially if you have only a short time.

Norman, we are lucky to have you there - nothing like being on the spot to get local knowledge. I think I'm going to call you "Our Man in Jerez" from now on [:D][:D]

I love Jerez, it's a great city. I have had 30 hours of lessons there. Mostly with Javier Ibanez, who is Santiago Lara's left hand man when with Mercedes Ruis.
The lessons are booked through the dance school of Chiqui de Jerez which is great because she lets me sit in on the early dance class (biginners Alegrias usualy).
Javier lets you video everything, he plays it real slow, so you get it all clearly and if you have 10 hours of lessons in a week you get tonns of material to work on.
I like to go there for the Flamenco festival at the end of February so that there are lots of shows to see. You can have your class, then do a free workshop,see two shows in the evening and still go to a pena till the early hours [:D]
Moraito has a small guitar shop on Calle Ancha. You can also have guitar lessons here, and there is a great bar next door called caneleja where the gypsy's hang out. Any time of day an impromptu flamenco session erupts from this bar, its just awesome...the real deal
