ToddK -> Info on Gerardo's Course please (Jun. 25 2010 3:32:48)

Hey everyone,

So ive decided im gonna scoop up my wife, and go to Spain next year for Gerardo's course.

I would like to go this year, but we just started talking about today, and its just not enough notice to take care of everything by July. We're gonna need to board our animals, get somebody to house sit, etc....

Anyway, i have a question.

How do i get my guitar down there? I doubt i can carry it on the plane. And im sure as hell not going to check it into baggage.

So how do i get a guitar to play over there?

Ricardo, how do you get your guitar over there? Do you check it?

TK

wow dude congratulations ! thats brilliant , very exciting

hey are you interested in accompanying dancers down the road and getting involved in the flamenco scene in your city more ? you should man ...its nice to have flamenco people around you to encourage you and share your experiences with...and find you gigs ..etc..

theres a couple of options ...like you say, i doubt they will let you take your guitar on the plane

you can get a metal guitar case..with that you have nothing to worry about..u can check it...nothing will happen to it..i flew around australia heaps with a hard case thats not even metal and nothing happened to my guitar ...but its ok for me, i wouldnt encourage anyone else to do it...just cause i got lucky dosent mean everyone will

or you can buy a cheaper practice guitar over there ...

ps.dont forghett to lossen your strings before flying

Hey Todd
I wrote a reply to getting a guitar on a plane some time ago here.

a few other members wrote about this here too

The airlines in Europe are getting really strict now so you have to make sure the guitar is your ONLY piece of carry on luggage.......or buy a first class ticket!!

hmm, i just cant take the chance of damage with my Brune, so it looks like
i'll just have to bring the cheapo Yamaha.

That sucks a$$!!

Hi Todd,

I can't see it being that much of a problem really since you will mainly be trying out fingerings and techniques etc.
I'm sure if you want to actually PLAY one of your own pieces at the (famous) get- togethers afterwards, someone will lend you their guitar.

cheers,

Ron

I've taken a flamenco guitar in a hard case as hand luggage at least 20 times and never had any problem. That includes flights to and from the USA and within Europe.
I don't ask at the check in, I'm sure they'd say no, I just take it with me. These days they are more strict about having only one piece of hand luggage, I just take a jacket with big pockets. I've never had even a comment about the guitar.
When I used to be in a band I always had the equipment in flight cases in the hold but they were proper cases and the guitars were electric so harder to damage. I wouldn't like a flamenco guitar in the hold - they really throw that stuff around sometimes.
If you're worried I suggest don't take a guitar you really love for a workshop, as Ron says it won't matter and then you can relax.

Orson, which type of hard case did you carry your guitar in?
I'm not sure whether they would allow a Hiscox hard case which looks bigger (but offer more protection) than the cases that are shaped like a guitar eg the TKL that you sent me.
Did you give it to the air stewardess once you got on the plane.

In 99 when I got to Australia from Singapore, I was able to hand carry an electric guitar and an acoustic guitar on board in soft cases. Haven't tried it since.

when they asked what i was going to carry on to the plane, i just showed them my laptop suitcase and didnt say a thing about the guitar. every single time, the person behind the desk ignored it. i think it's assumed that i'd ask the crew member. if any of the crew member said anything, i just asked if there was a closet in the back somewhere. i only had to do that once.

make sure you're one of the first on the plane. it make life easier.
