I'm looking for a little help concerning how best to play arpeggios...not having a teacher these forums and the various online lessons available are invaluable to me and any input is much appreciated.

I've been practising arpeggios using the 'planting' method over the last year. Being mostly self taught ( a handful of classical lessons 25 years ago) the discovery of this technique this far down the line was a revelation to me and has really helped. My question is concerning descending arpeggios and whether or not it's a good idea to practise the full plant as is done with ascending arpeggios or use a sequential plant.

I know this is perhaps 'classical' guitar talk, but the way I see some of the great flamencos play with such effortless and secure techniques I'm feel they must have learned these techniques.

Any input would be helpful

I have actually never seen anybody do it, though logically it could be done. Normal flamenco thing is to only full plant ima, and sequential plant ami or any weird combos, like iam, mia, etc etc. In the case of Gerardo Nuñez and some others, he NEVER full plants, even ima is done sequential and he was super fast when he was in top form.

Remember, soundwise, a full plant will stop all 3 strings from ringing when you set it up, and that might not be desireable. Could be the reason why full plant did not evolve to be poplular for the other arps. Just a guess.

Just an aside since you are into arps now. I recommend focus on the thumb when doing arps, if you can try to rest it when it plays to stablize the hand. Learning that early on is important for getting a good flamenco sound and feel to your arps IMO.

Glad to hear this as I've been struggling to use the full plant when descending ami.

I've been using thumb rest strokes a lot and I find they really do help secure the hand...in fact I now find them easier than the free stroke.

I'm finding that practice can be very rewarding when you...eventually...stumble upon the best way of doing something...it's a real motivation to keep going

....now about the alzapua technique...help!

hm i do it exactly the other way, ami full plant ima no plant.
For me it feels more relaxed, i dont know. Do what suits you i guess (and what sounds right/good).

I have to make a correction. When doing that "fast" arpeggio in Solea/SpB i DO plant on ima, but not on ami. When doing imami i dont plant at all. I consider imami to be a technique/pattern on its own. Thats why i referred above only for ami and ima pattern.

So...... when doing imami you plant ima and no-plant mi??? For sure i couldnt do that. imami only sequential for me.

Btw i checked again (upon your comment) and its not a full plant, only "am" plant [&:] sorry i am a bit chaotic!! i dont do these things consciously, i dont even do them consistently only one way all the time [X(]
