Chiste de Gales -> Another lost thumbnail (May 17 2010 8:03:14)

I keep an unwritten list of thumbnail-breaking tasks in my head so I never suffer one twice. I now have discovered a new one.

Here's a warning to all: When you are taking apart your cuisinart to put in the dishwasher, you can remove the feeder tower from the top cover, but you can not remove the sliding extension part of the tower.

I squeezed this thing really hard trying to do this and I slipped, losing most of the playable part of my thumbnail and bleeding some from the tear.

I can add one to the list. Do not use nails to open up cardboard boxes, like those from cereal or milk when you flatten them. I got a nasty paper cut under the nail bed of my i-finger from doing this.

Chiste,
I've learned over the past several years to do as many tasks with my left hand as possible. It was tough initially but i've gotten much better at it and it has saved many nails. I don't reach for things in drawers with my right hand and I'm more aware of nail breakers like Cuisinart's and dishwashers, yet it still happens.
I like to sail and onboard a boat there are lots of nail breakers but i've been pretty successful in not breaking too many...

It's pretty easy to lose a finger on a boat. Be careful handling ropes and water skiing. A friend lost part of a finger when a rope wrapped around it and the boat pulled forward.

Yeah, you gotta be careful around any boat sail or power...

I was walking along the docks once when a big Oil Rig Supply Vessel was coming in.
A guy whistled, threw the rope down and indicated to me to wrap it round the big, metal dockside capstan, which I did...only I got my hand trapped under the second wrap...and got it out about 0.25 seconds before it tightened up and stopped the boat... probably with a force of several tons!

I could hear the 2" dia rope stretching and groaning under the strain...

Brrr...horrible memory, even to this day.

Even now, I hate using things like circular saws or angle grinders...

cheers,

Ron

Ron,
Wow, you are lucky as that could have brought a whole new meaning to the words "solo compas" :)) I agree, when it comes to power tools and pinch points, i'm always trying to think one step ahead.

Standing in a guitar store leafing through a flamenco method book, I came across Juan Martin's advice never to wash dishes. He said it softens the nails. I think he even advised showing the printed passage to the student's wife/girlfriend!

One more reason for studying flamenco guitar....
