Great stuff and so true for me. I started with secondhand Watkins Rapier 33 for £15 when I was 14 years old. From my saturday job at Tesco's.

Yep, that's the model I had as well at 14, along with a 15W Amp.

I traded it in a year later to get a 12 string acoustic though.

Years later I bought a second hand Les Paul copy in Tottenham Court Rd (for about £150) just for fun.

Even more years later, my wife's young brother was playing in a kind of Punk influenced band and was using a Watkins Rapier 33. I felt sorry for him and gave him the Les Paul copy.
I asked him a few months later what he thought of it and he had to admit he didn't like it. "Too smooth and light action and fancy...I just like the chunky sound of the Watkins with heavy guage strings". [:D]

i started on a Kay electric i bought off a kid at school for a £5-er.

The body was made from 3/4" ply which you could clearly see round the edge of the body through the crappy stain/varnish. the amp was equally trashy.

not even much good for tinny 3 chord white noise let alone anything else!

I have that too. Your first guitar will always be beautiful and sort of holy.

Small world and crap wasn't it? I just wired mine into my record player or played on the toilet, with no amp. My Mum asked whether my fingers were supposed to bleed!

Having spent a lot of time around rock and roll types, I think that tv series is amusing and quite accurate.


Solos apart, I think that the role of the guitarist in flamenco is more like the bass guitarist in a rock band.

You know, whenever you get these top notch guitarists away from all the cool stage posturing and rock lifestyle trips etc....they are all really just geeky guitar nerds! [:D]

I've been thinking about what that guy was saying about the British bands onstage tending to take the piss out of everyone, including themselves...

Yeah... I think that really was true in comparison with the American bands who IMO took themselves pretty seriously.

I think that was one of the main differences myself.


How life has changed since those early years of pestering one's folks for money to buy a cheap guitar etc.

From what I see, parents these days are buying their kids Fenders and Gibsons and Roland keyboards even if they show the slightest sign of being interested. [:D]

Same with tennis and football, or acting lessons etc. No expense spared.

All these wanabee parents wanting their kids to be superstars....[8|]
