Glueing back braces to side? (Full Version)

When you guys (builders) let the back braces into the tentallones or solid binding, do you 'float' them just slightly off of the side wood of the guitar?

Or do you glue tight, directly onto the sides?

Just curious....

We run them all the way through the lining and side and glue them. The end is covered by the back bindings.

I stop them shorter than John and butt them into the ribs. Either method is good. The thing is you want the brace end to be snug in the mortise.

One trick is to make the cuts in the lining to fit the sides of the brace nice and close and then make the cut to fit the top of the brace slightly sloped down toward the ribs. Ever so slightly, just a hair. That way the forward part of the mortise where the brace enters is in contact with the brace first. Then when you push the back down the wood at the mouth of the mortise micro compresses around the brace and you have a super clean fit. When you add glue to a joint fitted that way it swells around the brace all the way to the rear of the mortise and locks it in.

Thanks.... Sorry I didn't respond. Down with medication poisoning...oh boy.

Since I use solid lining, before gluing in, I was penciling the cutout, then Japanese backsaw cut the angles, then finish with a round file.

The guy who taught me doesn't glue to the sides, only into his tentallones, allowing for 'possible swelling'. Just curious if there's 2 schools of thought here.

I don't see what difference it would make whether it's glued to the side, linings or tentallone. Swelling would have the same effect. Use well cured wood and maintain a proper humidity level in your shop and swelling won't be an issue.

Well, when you cut the binding ledge you usually expose at least some of the brace and it then gets glued to the binding and purfling. So it gets glue anyway. I think the only guiding principal is that the brace is well fitted into the mortise and glued without starving the glue joint.
