There is a two part essay about Diego del Gastor, who passed away on July 78, 1973, and was written by Brook Zern. Worth reading and well done!

Tom, those area facinanting facts/stories about Diego del Gastor! I wish I could be so fortunate...

See, if we just try and play flamenco, people will be amazed! Thanks for these articles, they just went into my 'save flamenco files'! ;>)

Tom,
I thought that was an extremely well done essay that Brook Zern wrote. He's really an excellent writer. Wouldn't it be great to have somebody of his caliber posting here? But then if he did I'd probably be too intimidated to make any posts.[:o]

Andy;

I happen to like a number of flamenco guitar styles and players. One is Diego del Gastor. For whatever reason people that have heard his name either love him or hate him. I like to separate the glitz from reality.

There is something about Diego I really appreciate, when you read about his life. He did not have or want much but he supported up to 20 families through his playing.

The essay that Brook wrote is well balanced and a tribute to a fine man who played flamenco guitar.

I know we have both had some "interesting moments" with some members of the American Moroñ group. But yet there are those from that group whom I get along with and such is life. [:)]

Andy;

Just one thing about the PDL statement:

I have read two accounts of PDL meeting Sabicas. One time he said he never met him and the other time he said he did. Will the real PDL step forward?

Chuck Berry was always in a hurry to or from a gig. On the way to his airplane to get home, a news paper person stopped him and asked, “Where were you born”! Mr. Berry was angry at being stopped and answered, “San Jose, California”!

In the Rock n roll Encyclopedia, the birthplace of Chuck Berry is listed as San Jose, California. Mr. Berry was born in St. Louis, Missouri.

Who knows what reality is and who said what or what they meant? [:)]

We sometimes attribute meanings to what we believe or want to believe regardless of reality.

In the introduction to flamenco class I¨m taking here in Seville (given in Spanish, brrr!), the teacher says to beware of Antonio Mairena´s book about flamenco, in which many explanations are given and many stories. Of course he is a creator of many songs and a very famous singer here. But the philosophy here at the Foundation (that sounds so official!) is to only believe what can be documented by newspapers or such. If something is not based on this, then it is merely anecdotal--just an opinion.
