En Cartagena minerales
en Cádiz está el mar
y Sevilla muele el trigo
como se canta por soleá

Ailsa -> RE: Paco awarded degree at Berklee (May 11 2010 6:02:55)

Oh Norman, you mean it wasn't original!! I'm so disappointed [&o]

Kidding!![:D][:D]

NormanKliman -> RE: Paco awarded degree at Berklee (May 11 2010 6:05:47)

Actually, it came to me just now as I was eating my lunch. Want to hear about it?

Ailsa -> RE: Paco awarded degree at Berklee (May 11 2010 6:22:27)

A Norman-story-special? I sure do!

NormanKliman -> RE: Paco awarded degree at Berklee (May 11 2010 6:32:41)

Well, it was nothing really, just my version of pea salad over pasta: peas, black olives, red peppers, mushrooms, an endive, an avocado, smoked cheese and turkey. Would be better with a little scallion, olive oil and basil.[8D][;)]

Ailsa -> RE: Paco awarded degree at Berklee (May 11 2010 6:39:34)

lol [:D][:D][:D] now I know what inspires you. Sounds pretty nice. I only had toasted cheese!!

No problems. For me the sweet caña thing in solea is like pouring syrup on a juicy salty steak. Not always to taste. But so long as we are not blaming chef PDL and all generations following for such a recipe, cuz it was not his to begin with.[;)]

NormanKliman -> RE: Paco awarded degree at Berklee (May 11 2010 7:15:35)

I've got no beef (heh) with the man, or anyone. It's all great music. But if you want to pursue that train of thought (damn these visuals![:D]), whose "fault" is it when guitarists play brutishly because they're trying to evoke some kind of old-school spirit?

Arash -> RE: Paco awarded degree at Berklee (May 11 2010 10:52:21)

sorry, couldn't resist [:D]

I dunno Arash,

Ruben is quite a charismatic guy and a nice player, but somewhere there is this destructive force throwing it all away.

He could and should have been somebody else with his talent and enthusiasm, I'm sure.

That saddens me.

But I ain't gonna lose any sleep over it...it's his bag...his choice.

cheers,

Ron

gato -> RE: Paco awarded degree at Berklee (May 11 2010 17:42:48)

You guys are so friendly, me I am well.....nice thread if you've got the time....oh well, don't mind me! I have no idea where this thread went, but I can see where this last page is going. Doctoral knowledge, ah yes! Phd, Phd, Phd, 'kind of slips the mind.

I would like to see more flamencos get those kind of degrees, it's kind of nice to see it.....I wonder who's next or will it happen again? Now who would it be? Any ideas? Who's your candidate? Maybe it's too late in the thread.....or perhaps it's something we could all mull over in our own thoughts.....dancers, guitarists, poets, singers, there's a lot of people. It's about time! You know maybe someone said it already. I don't know, it just occured to me without anything what so ever. It's a great thought though. Just the same! So -- I agree with you all, whatever. For all I know there are degrees out there....hmmmm. That's a nice thought! Maybe I should read the dang thread and find out! [:D][:D][:D]

Wow thats a big event. Were there other honorate doctorates received there or was this only for Paco? Jeez look at how excited he is [:D] he can rip picados still like in past but gets excited when speaking in front of people, i dont understand this guy! [:D]

Arash -> RE: Paco awarded degree at Berklee (May 12 2010 2:35:13)

i think he is only excited because he has to speak english [:D]
thats not what he always does (like picado), so a little bit of excitement [:D]

Here's some criticism, based on my preferences: His soleás are a little too round, bright and clean (metaphorically, of course). I've never liked that caña/polo ending of his, and his picados usually derail the mood, especially the ones that go with the caña/polo idea. Same story with some of his highly syncopated falsetas.

Hi Norman, I read your views with interest, and just wondering if you can give a or some examples of soleás that you do like, any particular guitarist/s?

NormanKliman -> RE: Paco awarded degree at Berklee (May 12 2010 21:54:46)

Hi Mark,

Everybody's got a falseta or a detail or something. I've heard good playing from Paco, Manolo Franco, the Habichuelas, Manuel de Paula, Antonio Carrión, Enrique de Melchor... But one of the very few who always played well and remained true to the spirit of soleá from start to finish was Melchor de Marchena. Obviously, that's just my opinion/preference. The ones I mentioned and plenty of others do a fine job.

Just one of the many facets of his personality that I find most likeable !

yohan -> RE: Paco awarded degree at Berklee (May 13 2010 1:12:45)

I would love to have paco as a dictator of my country![:)]
