Florian -> Simon whats a Big Endian codec ? (May 4 2010 21:12:26)

Does it only work in mac or can i use it in xp too ?

a guy is filming a show and says i can only view the files in my pc if i have this codec

cathulu -> RE: Simon whats a Big Endian codec ? (May 5 2010 20:23:27)

I have never heard of this. But here is my simple take on it courtesy wikipedia

"bigendian" is typically about byte order (computer "words" can be composed of 2 bytes = 16 bits, or 4 bytes equals 32 bits, or 8 bytes = 64 bits etc depending on the architecture and power of the computer processor), it means that the more important numerically significant byte goes first - simple everyday examples of that are "92", or "year, month day".

smallendian means the smaller least significant byte goes first, like "zwei and dreizig" ("2 and thirty" i.e. the way the germans do it) or "day, month, year".

Mostly we never worry about that crap, that is like worrying about the computer machine language instructions!

Motorola chip i.e. apple computers before they went to the intel chip a couple of years ago use bigendian, and the intel chip aka microsoft windaze is smallendian. But, if you have the video codec on your machine, it should play imho. If macs couldn't create stuff to play on intel machines, well then macs would be DOA as they are like 5% of the market. But macs can and do create stuff that plays on intel machines eg windows. Quicktime for example.

Ask him what the codec is and make sure you have it on your computer. Forget the bigendian crap. Don't worry about it. It is not a video codec. The guy was talking BS to freak you out.

Good luck!

Bigendian is just the order of the bytes and not something you should be concerned with - codecs can use little endian formats as well. Just ask him which codec he is encoding with. You should be able to transcode to whatever you need.

I thought so !!! that pr*ck..[:D]..it would save us about $400

thank you guys[;)]

Florian -> RE: Simon whats a Big Endian codec ? (May 6 2010 0:36:17)

heres what the guy said...to confuse me

quote:

Hey Peter,
Yeah 3 cameras would be nice as long as we can find some sort of image balance between them in terms of exposure and colour etc. The 2 cam price from our point of view is just double the 1 cam price (inc operator) - it will be a tricky edit, but if your guy has some experience with it he should be able to manage. I do need to let you know though, that the files i get from my broadcast camera have a pro codec and most computers wont be able to read them unless they have the Big Endian codec installed - (its quite expensive). I can convert them for you but that will just take me a couple of hours - the second camera is a tape based camera so i can give you those at the end of the night.
Hope this helps, and please feel free to call if you want to discuss details.

so he wants to charge for convertion too...

Exitao -> RE: Simon whats a Big Endian codec ? (May 6 2010 0:54:21)

Try to get the name of the codec, or at least the model of the "broadcast camera."

I have a friend who works in broadcasting and can get some info from him. I'll PM him now, but he'll likely need this information to be really helpful.

Escribano -> RE: Simon whats a Big Endian codec ? (May 6 2010 5:46:36)

So this will be unedited footage.

You won't be able to deal with the codec off the camera without some serious editing software and hardware, same goes for the tapes if they are DV-CAM, HDCAM etc. - without an expensive deck you won't be able to play them into anything.

So, you're going to need an editor's services. A multi-camera shoot with all those timecodes and uncut, ungraded footage is beyond an amateur's capability, with all the kit and time in the world.

The model names of the cameras would help to confirm, as Exitao suggests. He may be exaggerating and he is using HDV and AVHCD. Even then it's still a lot of work and some beefy hardware. I use around $5000 of kit to edit single camera HDV.

Another important consideration is the audio; synching that between two or more cameras is difficult. One camera will have to be running all the time for the others to synch to or he will be capturing audio independently. That will all need synching in the edit. Not trivial. These kind of shoots run into $1000s.

i have got canopus, and i have a pretty fast computer ...and a pretty good video card...but i dont know...maybe il just get him to convert to something more common to avoid headaches

we recording the audio straight from the microphones (just gonna use the sound from cameras to synk it...one of the cameras will just be fixed and run continiously)...each microphone separate for eazyer mixing and level adjustment...also cool cause i can mix and convert to 5.1 dolby and arange different microphones to come out from different direction..

so what standard format should i ask him to convert it too ? what retains the most quality and its eazyer to deal with and edit ?

thank you i will do that ...acctualy i think he has a website il try find it

Florian -> RE: Simon whats a Big Endian codec ? (May 6 2010 11:21:37)

this is the guys website http://www.daylightbreaks.com.au/

i am looking to see if what cameras he uses are listed anywhere...he seems to do all the big festivals in adelaide..

Escribano -> RE: Simon whats a Big Endian codec ? (May 6 2010 11:46:27)

If he gives you a bunch of tapes and some P2 cards or other solid state storage you have got to be able to play them into your editor - consumer editing software is not geared to these pro formats, nor will you have the tape deck or card reader. Usually one ingests straight from the camera over firewire or from an expensive deck.

You are better asking for a transcode to a format Canopus can ingest and it will have to be on a large external hard disk.

A high bit-rate H.264 transcode would probably be ok.

But you may not get a SMTP timecode through the transcoding (does Canopus support timecodes?), so synching multi-camera footage and audio is going to be almost impossible. Can Canopus support a multi-camera set-up? Editing this would be non-trivial.

I wouldn't bother with this unless you can afford an edit suite or pay them to edit it for you. My two cents.

p.s. video cards make little difference, it is all about CPUs (lots of them)

XXX -> RE: Simon whats a Big Endian codec ? (May 6 2010 11:48:27)

so whats this all about? A DVD, a TV shot? Why doesnt he use DivX? I think most porn is encoded with that anyway...

Flo...after reading all this, I think you and the camera guy are talking about very different things here.
He's talking about broadcast quality orginal raw files ready to be edited on professional studio equipment and what you are after is just some good quality footage you can mix down yourself.

Explain that to him and if he doesn't really do that or is wanting extra dough to "convert" it for you...then just advertise for some keen amateur film makers and offer to pay their expenses + a bonus if things go well for everyone.

Sedlak's "Hero Worship" movie certainly wasn't done on Broadcast standard stuff and yet he used multi-image stuff mixed down with a synced sound track..

(PS: "Big Endian" sounds sorta like a well-endowed Native American?..[:D][:D])

cheers,

Ron

I am a bit of a control freak like that lol...only i know what i want and sometimes i dont even know myself until i experiment, but i know when i get it..and i want control over it...where the camera looks etc.. which angle we use, which effects, how light and how dark it will be...plus it will be fun for me and to him its a job to me is what i love cause it concernes our work...he might hurry to get the job done, i wont let it leave my desk till i am 100% happy

but most of all I enjoy it ...

so whats this all about?

just a show...i use my webcam for my pornos

yes i think you are right...i dont have any specific filmaker hardware but i have a prety fast cpu and all the video software in the world..so something at a half decent quality that i can use would be just perfect

Adobe premier, Canopus Edius.Pro.v3, Sony Vegas Pro 8.0b, Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 12, Canopus ProCoder v3.00.50, DVD Architect...acctualy i like using VIRTUAL DUB and the free effects...theres some very good ones out there for free..

i should be able to get a half decent result...

this was my first edit with different angles...the 2 cameras were different on 2 different nights...one was hd and the other not...so it looks different but i got better, i did it in EDIUS...this is a low quality just for the web...the video is clearer

in this one messed around with colours to make everything more vibrant

and this one i used mixed different angles
