hello,

Just wondering about this palos.

I know its in the cantinas family but thats about it. which key is it usual played in? what defines it from other cantinas? is it just the dance that differs or does the guitarist have specific chords/techniques that differ from others.....etc

cheers

Stu

I don't know much about it (or anything else) - but to get the ball rolling:

It's played in C.
The words often mention something about Madrid (who started that? Chacón maybe?), such as how splendid the Gran Calle de Alcalá looks with all the andaluces walking up and down it.
(And if you want to improve the appearance of your street, get a crowd of andalusians to walk up and down it [;)] - it's a nice touch).

I assume that the verses have a very different structure from your regular alegrías because the melody seems to be more stretched out and rambling. Then there's a characteristic refrain "Y caracoles, y caracoles..."

Allright, let's see what the experts have to say.

Meanwhile, have a look (and listen) here:

It's a SONG that uses the compas of alegrias/cantinas, and can be in any of those keys C A or E, depending on the range of the singer. The melody is harmonized mostly just C and G7 in key of C but there is a characteristic mode change toward the end where the voice goes down in pitch and you harmonize with F-Emajor (phrygian solea sound). But that change is brief and it returns to C major pretty quick.

I think it is Chacon's song. Check out his version with Ramon Montoya.

I think Oscar Herrero has a Cantiñas accomp vid that covers the main palos in the family including Caracoles, and you get a chance to accompany it yourself like we did in the thread of cante minus guitar.

Its the boring version of Cantinas with weird positions of chordchange. It makes a cassetterecorder out of the guitarrist like cana, garrotin and peteneras... coz you cant vary extremly much... :./
