Hi All!

I have noticed, that Paco Pena, Paco de Lucia, Victor Serranito ( Monge).
Use a dot on the 7th position.

How many of you use it?

I assume you mean a dot marking the fret position on the neck or fingerboard? It may be there, but do they use it?

I doubt it, the cejilla makes this dot redundant or even misleading, doesn't it?

One of my guitars has a dot on the edge of the ebony at 7th and it's very useful.

Even if I capo on 2nd, I know where 5th is without having to do that double take thing.

Even if I capo on 1st I know 7th is one up from the dot, so in all it's a useful little thing to have, BUT not to rely upon, especially when the other guitars don't have it.

I don't use it. If you keep your concentration, it's not necessary... one has to know where he is at all times. If you use the one finger, one fret, that the fretboard is pretty simply 1234 5678 9101112

Yep, I agree with Jim. Although I may be capoing at 1, 2 or 3, the dot on 7th is a useful reference for where 7th is, and therefore where I have shift to to allow for the change of key imposed by the capo.

In fact my Sanchis didn't have any dots on the top of the neck so I put on some little stickers - one at 5 and one at 7. One my main gigging guitar (a Takamine electro) I had some little pearl markers fitted to the top of the neck for the same reason.

YMMV of course, whatever works for the individual. Who cares how many dots you use as long as you are in key and in compas.

I htink it is usefull too, when you play with capo, it is a good ancre too, when you go up the neck, you can rever on the dot.

I play flamenco for 16 years, but i am going to try it see how it works for me.

Well, I am going to carry on playing with finger memory and not look at the fingerboard for clues (too often). Tomatito closes his eyes[;)]

Don't tell a classical guitarist that you can play guitar without looking at the fingerboard, or they will explode. Some people can only play if their eyes are plugged into the fingerboard as if they were a lamp that was plugged into the wall.

I was watching the guitarists very closely the other night at the flamenco festival, all of them looked at the frets, and at times squinted their eyes as if it hurt, like they were forcing the sound out. Then Emilio came on, he looked right at the singer and never seemed to look at the guitar and his face was beautifully composed, no dramatic facial gestures, just serene and in control. I know which looked best to me.

Well guys. (IMHO)

If you're used to a dot or if you train playing with it, it can be usefull. If you are not used to it it can be very distracting, because you focus on that spot all the timeand because you start thinking. ( I have the capo on third, the dot is on 7th. Meaning that fifth fret is dot + one[>:]) Oh no. I dont wanna think like that when I play. I freaking think all day long, and I allow myself yo think a bit when I play, but I would prefer not to.[8D]

You can train yourself to play without. I'm an ex classical violinis, and a violin has more tones (2 octaves) and half the scale length + no frets, so you learn to pitch by teaching your hand/fingers where to go and adjust with the ear. It's a lot easyer to that on a guitar

Hi Anders!

I totally agree with you!

I am not used to a dot, and now it looks like a big eye is looking at me and say: "So, you want to beat me, right?!"

But, I have noticed, that for instance in a Peteneras, named Cancion from Paco Pena, I have to go from the first position, to the 7th.

Mostly it is ok, but if I do not play the song for a while, the first thing that goes wrong, is going to the 8th position, instead of the 7th.

With other songs it happen sometimes too.

I hope I can avoid that, with the dot, and it will not intevere with other things!

But, if it will not help me in a month or so, the first thing that, will be whiped of is the dot!

Peter, you dont need that dot.

Guitarists often forget that change of position should be a part of practising. They rely on their dots etc. It's actually quite easy and a fast thing to learn.

When I am playing a piece, which I've played for example, 1000 times, I don't use the dots as a reference, I can play it with my eyes closed.

studying is another thing, then I use them sometimes. So...

Whats going on?

Use them if you think it's usefull, when you don't need them, don't.
