XXX -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 26 2010 13:00:05)

dude hes brilliant. great find.

Arash -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 26 2010 13:03:46)

yeah, he is great.
i specially liked the SPB and Bulerias.
the SPB with the alternate tuning is really nice.

and he has some serious asskicking skills.

he reminds me on Diego.

Andy Culpepper -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 26 2010 13:14:13)

holy crap... he's really really good. I really hope this kind of stuff represents the future or Flamenco

rombsix -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 26 2010 15:19:28)

Arash! Gracias amigo! Keep finding such great treasures.

Was he playing a rondena in standard tuning? In E flat, I guess...

It's so funny how the only times the audience went OLE were when he pulled picado runs from hell. [8D]

PS: He has braces on! I'd like to see some rasgueados with his teeth! [:D]

PPS: Those floor mics are awesome! That's what everyone should use. To hell with the ones that get in the way when they're video taping the players!

PPPS: Isn't that bit where he reaches over to tune with his right hand to keep holding the chord with his left hand awesome? [:D]

GOD DAMN! That guy can play! His right hand is so powerful! And his left hand is so powerful as well! Really, unbelievable. SUPER!

Arash -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 1:39:19)

yes, the Rondena is played in E flat (with a short visit to taranta @ 1.38 [:D] )

now that you mention it...those mics are interesting. anyone knows which brand / system?
they are quite far away from him and still the sound is quite bright and very good.

ps: i want that Conde.[:)]

yeah, imo some other parts deserved even more OLEs than those picado parts.

i would probably go OLE all the time then thrown out[:D]

Arash -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 2:09:41)

my uncle told me that once he went to a concert from Jason in US.
he was in the first row.

he was so excited that he went Ole non stop lol

and Jason did something like this (of course with a smile and friendly manner), that meant like: "wait a little my friend,,, the OLE part comes next" LOL

Jason, if you should read this, do you remember him ?lol[:D]

I like how sharp and "attacky" Condes generally sound in the trebles, but the basses always sound dull especially with not fresh strings like here. Compare the sound with new basses on the Cerreduela ROndena video.

to be honest, nowadays i prefer exactly this little bit "dull" sound. like one or two week old (ok lets say 1 week lol) strings (not too dull, but not too fresh and buzzy like 1 day old strings either). the thing is, you have to play more powerful. but then you get the best sound imo. this sound is not too messy and like a buzzy motor, but more seperated and defined...... of course, too dull is bad.

Arash -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 2:54:55)

but anyway deniz, i know what you mean, same here like Cerreduela :

that bass sound is good too, fresh and nice, but for more rythmical and powerfull playing i prefer i tiny bit duller sound.

Stu -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 3:20:17)

Andy Culpepper -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 4:08:58)

I got a little chill at 1:05 in the bulerias video.... I'm a sucker for good rasgueados lately, then I had to go and practice mine
I also love that sound of the Conde with a little it dull basses[:)]

Arash -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 5:31:07)

Ramzi, a note about the tuning: i guess the problem is that if you have a performance and your guitar is tuned normal the whole time, then when for a certain piece you have to tune a string so much deeper (specially like here E to B), then i guess you can be sure that the string won't exactly stay in that tune, not even for the few minutes in the certain piece. the string doesn't have enough time to settle down in that tune.

now that i am talking about this, that might also be a reason why he plays with a little bit elder strings?
because in case of new strings, that problem is even worse if you play with such alternate tunings !
don't know, just guessing

Arash -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 5:57:59)

oh and some info about this guy:

Fernando Terremoto was the uncle of Manuel. Fernando died very young this year (few months ago).

Manuel was accompanying guitarist of his uncle.

you can see him here in the left side

the pieces you see in the videos will be on his CD.

XXX -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 7:53:36)

CD? Its getting better and better. Btw i tried to translate the info text on his bulerias into german. See what came out [:D]

quote:

Ailsa -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 7:57:24)

Am just listening to the Solea por Bulerias at the mo - absolutely stunning. Is the guitar tuned differently? I'm not very good at figuring out alternate tunings yet.

Arash -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 8:02:06)

yeah Ailsa, the Bass E is tuned to B

deniz, lol, google translator is funny sometimes - "Fernando Erdbeben" [:D]

Weird! so I happened upon a thread from earlier this month about the new diego del morao album and the cigalamusic site has a pic of diego with a signed paco guitar too!!!! http://www.elcigala.com/diegodelmorao/

whats happening??... seems strange to me that pro players would use a signed guitar!!

Stu -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 8:50:09)

so does manuel have an album out????

Arash -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 9:41:22)

he played other solo pieces in this jerez festival (which are not on youtube)
so i bet was using it also to promote his upcoming CD.
CD is not out yet as far as i can see.

Re. Paco Signatures: i find it specially cool that these pro. guys do that.
I mean normally you would say, they are pros. themselves, they give signatures themselves and are all kickass players. so no need a sig. from another pro. (paco). but that shows how much paco is admired and respected and that everybody knows what he has done for flamenco. so even from those well known guitar players like Diego who have their unique style which differs from Pacos style, you see these signatures. cool thing imo.

XXX -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 10:13:39)

which is just another proof of how cool Paco is [:D]
BTW Paco is coming to my near in November, precisely to Leverkusen. Im actually thinking of getting his signature. [;)]

lol Deniz, lets stop this Pacomania here.
And also no more talk about Conde.
Lets don't attract certain people to destroy a nice thread (including Paco, Conde and all the other nice things in life lol)

XXX -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Apr. 27 2010 10:44:29)

what is even more funnier than Pacomania is to make others believe that there is Pacomania and watch them get mad at it [:D] but yes you are right![;)]

you don't know a lot of gypsies I guess. They tend to do things like a group, you know what ever becomes the "cool thing" they all follow suite. Like getting a tatoo or hair cut, or type of clothes, etc. Jesus de Rosario too. The idea is Paco above, and Tomatito below I heard. I guess Manuel has not met Tomatito yet.[;)]

orsonw -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Jun. 1 2010 12:05:10)

Does anyone have information regarding the release of Manuel Valencia's cd?

malakka -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Jun. 1 2010 12:19:18)

For those in Northern California, MANUEL VALENCIA is performing with MANUEL AGUJETAS and MIGUEL EL GITANO DE BRONCE on June 19th in Berkeley.

Also, Manuela Carrasco & Co. is performing in Berkeley on June 15th

http://www.bayareaflamencofestival.com/HOME.html

orsonw -> RE: Manuel Valencia (Jun. 1 2010 12:57:05)

The Bayarea Flamenco festival give this biography of Manuel Valencia.

"MANUEL VALENCIA (Guitarrist) Direct from Jerez, one of the most promising young accompanists for Gypsy flamenco singing. They say this young man was born with a guitar under his arm. Seeped in the toque of Manuel Morao, he learned to accompany the cante from his uncle, Fernando Terremoto (hijo). He performed for several years in Morao's company and has toured with Maria de la Mar Moreno. He is currently a member of Gerardo Núñez's group and is working on a solo CD produced by Núñez."

It's good stuff, but frankly I think they would be outclassed by some of the Brazilian artists I've heard.

I still like my old Flamenco stuff which NOBODY can beat..

cheers,

Ron
