gj Michelob -> RE: Opinion wanted on rosette design (Apr. 12 2010 8:41:48)

This post begs the question, what is the purpose of the rosette? It is simply an ornament and as such an opportunity to embellish an otherwise colorless craft. All other components of the instrument which may double as ornament as well, are primarily functional in nature. Binding, Headstock, Bridge and the like. Certain instruments sport the same rosette, quite consistently, to the point it becomes a “trade dress”. Manuel Reyes’ or Conde Hermanos’ rosettes have certainly become distinctive and recognizable traits of those makers’ guitars. From the foregoing I would venture to say that a rosette should be valued and used as both (i) “uniquely the maker’s signature” and (ii) “representative of the maker’s art” (with leave of functionality). Deteresa, if I may express my views sincerely, while I cannot find any fault in your Rosette, do you want it to be uniquely your signature and representative of your art? your music and your guitars seem to desire something more “deteresa” than this is.
