Does this look at all appropriate for a Flamenco guitar? Can't decide if it is good taste or not. If I were to do it for real I would probably make the tiles a little smaller and have more rings. What do you think?

Looks nice. Leave it like it is.

It looks killer, make more you're doing good stuff.

Next time inlay it in a top. Also don't rout a complete circle leave a wedge of solid wood under the fingerboard and stop your lines against it. That is traditional, otherwise you should plug that open part of the channel with a scrap of your top.

Definately good taste Deteresa!
I like it a lot.

This post begs the question, what is the purpose of the rosette?

It is simply an ornament and as such an opportunity to embellish an otherwise colorless craft. All other components of the instrument which may double as ornament as well, are primarily functional in nature. Binding, Headstock, Bridge and the like.

Certain instruments sport the same rosette, quite consistently, to the point it becomes a “trade dress”. Manuel Reyes’ or Conde Hermanos’ rosettes have certainly become distinctive and recognizable traits of those makers’ guitars.

From the foregoing I would venture to say that a rosette should be valued and used as both
(i) “uniquely the maker’s signature” and
(ii) “representative of the maker’s art” (with leave of functionality).

Deteresa, if I may express my views sincerely, while I cannot find any fault in your Rosette, do you want it to be uniquely your signature and representative of your art? your music and your guitars seem to desire something more “deteresa” than this is.

Its very simple as last time I saw rosettes on the foro, but this time I like it coz of the colour and the lines that surround it. Somehow nice. Last time it was brown..that was boring.

HolyEvil -> RE: Opinion wanted on rosette design (Apr. 12 2010 16:52:11)

looks gorgeous mate..
but maybe you can do another one that instead of the little diamond shaped boxes being black, you can make it a dark maroon..
Kinda like how raw pig's liver looks like.. sorry I have NO other reference for the colour =)

cheers

I think it looks really good. And it doesn't need more rings - it seems well balanced as it is. The red and white are good, reminds me of the mezquita in Cordoba. Is that padauk?

KMMI77 -> RE: Opinion wanted on rosette design (Apr. 12 2010 19:16:08)

I like it also

HemeolaMan -> RE: Opinion wanted on rosette design (Apr. 12 2010 19:27:12)

maybe maple for the field and purple heart for the diamonds?

Stephen Eden -> RE: Opinion wanted on rosette design (Apr. 13 2010 1:56:10)

looks very nice not too disimilar to one I have seen recently by someone else, but then again they usually are these days.

If you like a 1mm thick ring use 1mm veneer It makes the wood bolder and if you get a bit on the quatering of the wood it also shines!

rufred -> RE: Opinion wanted on rosette design (Apr. 13 2010 4:49:38)

Hi deteresa,
to me it looks really beautiful and individual, is it all made of wood? Especially the brown fields where the black squares are in, what is it?) maybe I´ll steel your idea for my next guitar if you don´t mind. Ireally really like it.

Manfred

krichards -> RE: Opinion wanted on rosette design (Apr. 13 2010 23:50:08)

Of course its appropriate. Its your design for your guitars so you have whatever you want.
Myself, I prefer more traditional patterns but I do like the natural wood colours and, like you, I don't use pinks and blues etc

Andy Culpepper -> RE: Opinion wanted on rosette design (Apr. 14 2010 14:27:00)

Hey all, thanks for the input! Yes the red is padauk. It has a cool endgrain pattern if you look close. I might make a similar design with lighter colored woods. I like the idea of a lighter field.
