minordjango -> guitar blues (Apr. 11 2010 2:21:01)

Hi all.

here is a 2 part story.

i had this old guitar (hand made) a few cracks , but its was pretty fine, it was left in storage (in a very hot dry climate, the bridge has come off!!! [:-]

the wood fretboard as decresed in size meaning you can feel the sharpness of the fret wire.

question do i get it fixed ? its a very playable (sorry was) i got it really cheap, i think it could be ok , what do i do to get it repaired !!, what expense ?

cheers all

MD,

Personally I would use it for practising cricket! [:D]

Put it on eBay with a lavish history and description (say PdL touched it or something) and no doubt some mug will buy it for $2000. [:D]

cheers,

Ron

Hey Ron really , well i like crciket, ill do that, maybe i can say Graham gooch used it and made a century at old trafford !!.

ist looks like there they were running a lot of singles !!

stratos13 -> RE: guitar blues (Apr. 11 2010 3:51:24)

No problem with the guitar.

I had once the same with a guitar of mine, i gave it to a luthier in my hometown and after a week it was like new!

Find someone to reglue the bridge and you are fine!

stratos13 -> RE: guitar blues (Apr. 11 2010 3:55:41)

sorry i didn't see.

It cost me 50 euros, but he also installed a golpeador, made a new saddle.
The guitar was an alhambra 1C that belongs to a friend actually, but he didn't used it so i kept it.
It was really good, but now - after the changes it plays perfectly. And is really better than alhambras of higher price range. For a cheap instrument it is great.
The absolute beach guitar!

minordjango -> RE: guitar blues (Apr. 11 2010 4:03:28)

thankyou stratos,

thats hopeful, it looks bad , i guess the main concern , is this the fret wires are nearly (literally are) poking out of the fret board, all frets , so it was really in hot conditions, .

it would be the best beach guitar, it actually is pretty decent, well it was.

50 euro is fine for all of that, worried for the fretboard.

stratos13 -> RE: guitar blues (Apr. 11 2010 4:31:34)

I think the fretboard thing is not a problem either.
If i understand correctly the frets are pinching your hands at the side.
I have a new bouzouki and the luthier told me to expect this to happen, and when it does he will fix this with no charge.
I think it is a matter of filing down the sides of the frets,

Stratos, your Greek amigo ? Me too. i also play greek bouzouki, rembetika style

anyhow that is good news , im really worried about that guitar, some fellow, said it would cost a future, i also thought , just glue Bridge/saddle on, and do up the frets, (maybe less tension strings on, i think the Luither was just experimenting !.

stratos appreciate the help, i was going to follow good old rons advice use it for chricket on the beach.

file the frets ok i think it can be done , i am also worried for intonation as the guitar Neck , is a little odd (Warped the word i think).

would be nice to repair it and have a hand made guitar working well !!

Estevan -> RE: guitar blues (Apr. 11 2010 7:05:11)

Looks like a Santos Hernandez to me. Does it have a sound port?

Estevan your exactly correct, i had it a while , it was a very beautiful instrument , i hope it still can be !!!.

im going to Find a luither in NZ or maybe Australia to fix / repait as thats my next point of call/ or back here in the UK in a few months.

no soundport, i maybe tempted , if it structurally can stand it !

???

Is someone taking the P here or what?? [:-]

If this is what the label says then MD....forget what I said....

Santos was absolutely hopeless at building cricket bats!

Get it fixed by a top Luthier!!

Then sell it and buy the Bellido you wanted and put the rest in the Bank!

cheers,

Ron

OK...Damn..you guys really had me fooled there!

So I guess it's just a cheap guitar that's "opened up" too much! [:D]

cheers,

Ron

How you all know my surname ?

Ron i think Estevan got me too (Takin' the is great got us both!), its modeled on a santos design, but i have no idea what make it is as it has no lable, but i can say (Before it opened up!) and boy did we get that right !/

it was a decent Axe.

i was bowled over by the sound,
[:@]

But Ron yeah yer right , im still keen on a bellido, but its pretty old ! , no hurry i guess.

i played a yamaha the other day it sounded better than this FL2 ramirez, me need a new guitar.

i ask for some quotes and ask a few of you folk what you think

Jeff Highland -> RE: guitar blues (Apr. 11 2010 12:48:27)

Filing the fret ends is a 20 minute job for a luthier. get it done now while the fretboard is dry and shrunken and it should never recur.
Then humidify the guitar and have the bridge glued, looks to have come off cleanly so it should be an easy job. Not really DIY unless you have the right long reach clamps and cauls (or a vacuum bridge clamp as I now do)

Hot Hide Glue is the glue of choice for this as it takes much higher temperatures before it fails

minordjango -> RE: guitar blues (Apr. 11 2010 15:54:05)

cheers Jeff,
