kozz -> Sequiriyas Books / Lessons / Methods (Apr. 9 2010 5:46:51)

Does anyone know if there is method like the Oscar Herrero for Solea, but then for Sequiriyas?
I liked the OH method the way it was setup and I am looking for something similar.

If anyone knows something, greatly appreciated.

thanks.

Thanks anyway Yohan [:D]
I try to avoid prof.dr as much as possible with his flamenco influenced jazz compositions.

I was more thinking like our fellow dutch guythis, but than in bookform, with explanition of the structure of the cante etc.

Have you got a link to this Kozz? I've seen a few online but not sure if its the one you're referring to.

What was it that you liked about it?

I made it to 0:50 through the video and then gave up. His instructions are much more tedious and complicated than necessary. He calls the videos "for beginners". At best, this is for intermediate players.

Hee Sean,
sorry I wasn't clear. Its the Paso a Paso series.
The thing I liked about it is that is was just about one palo, but very indepth. The had a nice setup of falsetta's / introductions / remate etc.
But als por Cante, its just a very complete package.
And I was looking for something similar for sequiriyas.

I have Normans falsetta collection which is very nice, and I've ordered another 100 falsetta colletion from Alain Faucher. But thats "only" falsetta's.

Because I dont have a teacher around here which gives proper flamenco lesson I have to read it from the net and books.
The one teacher I had in the past told me not to pay attention to much to compas, and that almost nobody plays any golpes anymore....you get the picture ?[:D]

minordjango -> RE: Sequiriyas Books / Lessons / Methods (Apr. 10 2010 0:29:22)

hi kozz,
back yo Payo again , his videos really are inspiring, O.herrero and claude worms, have a huge book dedicated to solea, and Seguiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiyas!, with cd many excellent explanations, very in depth, also modern falsetas and much tradion including lots of Nino ricardo which is what Payo often plays.

maybe for you and me, id suggest Granados book nu 1 as the compas is so important and his examples are great musical etc, but maybe a great idea is getting a DVD in Palmas get the beat sorted then it will all come !! i think thats cool way , as they were doin it like this in Granada,

i.e learn how to do palmas for the palo you studying . then learn variations of some compas, then a falseta, (like you do with bulerias, as u told me kozz).

I love his playing, but I hate when he talks. Particularly the barking of Japanese. Its unpleasant to listen to. I wonder- why arent there real
performance vids of him. He seems good enough.

I actually really like it , as it allows me to think in Japanese or Spanish again ! and its full-on entertainment, his playing is defo fine if you like the more old style, check out his Bulerias from Nino ricardo style,

and his vids really offer great info from a fellow whos studied and had fun with the great, and it comes out in his play/personallity

Doitsujin -> RE: Sequiriyas Books / Lessons / Methods (Apr. 11 2010 0:05:12)

I would not recommend humberto on youtube to learn seguiryas because he has just an awesome sounding guitar but most of what he says and his playing skill is low quality. He also told some serious thoughts about what and how you have to learn flamenco guitar and that made me a little upset. He seems to be a little bit weird like many old people become...talking with brain shut off.
Ruben Diaz explains much better. I think his source (also if hes not so liked here) is the better choose.

Are you serious Doit?
I really love Payo Humberto playing, in fact I am gonna meet up with him this month.
Funny how perceptions can change, I dont see him as a weird guy, but that could be due to the fact that I'd rather see some joy than overly serious talk about flamenco.

Doit as an older person myself, I have to tell you I've met some very weird young people too, some of them on this Foro!!

I like Humberto as a character because he's passionate about flamenco. Maybe he doesn't know everything, but he knows more than I do, so I'd happily listen to his opinions.

@Kozz please let us know how your meeting with Humberto goes.

yes.

Ailsa, I didn´t say that only he is weird. He seems to be not dumb coz uses pieces of business style japanese... maybe he overdoes his acting coz he makes a youtube-show. And in shows you have to overact because would be boring if you wont. But hes weird. Yes, Im weird too.
What made me upset against him was that he puts down modern flamenco and sees the area of nino ricardo as the ultimate only true flamenco what is nuts IMO. I also dont like that he presents himself as a great teacher who knows all. Im very sure that you wont be able to have a discussion with him about any idea he dont share. He would never change his ideas nor listen to you. I dont like that. Eso es.

[;)] When you are born you are simple minded and very sensitive. When you begin to think...you think everybody follows your will. If not you cry and shout till Mama gives you the sweets.
Than you grow up and recognize that you have to communicate and have to make compromises in order to survive in a society.
Than you get old and become simple minded like a child again.

Just a tiny example: Who doesn't know grumpy old people who are yelling at people in trains or hitting you with the walking stick or bag when you are standing in the way? Or old people searching for 30mins small money at the counter in the supermarket and 30 people are already waiting. Everybody smiles at that and let em their will coz they are old children.

If you live long enough.. you will become one. There are no exceptions! Muhahaha

The positive side is...you can do what you want without any manners... nobody cares. [;)] The negative side... you wont be able to think about that coz your brain is shut off.

Best thing is when they touch your back with the supermarket car while you are waiting in the queue. Act as if they couldnt see or notice or something. [:D]
I think old people often just want more attention.

To Humberto, i like the fact the he shares stuff and he seems to know his stuff too. Look at all the details he is pointing at, when going through Nino Ricardo. On the other hand, the prominent ranting about modern is also existent, like in so many other lovers of the old style, but in the end i just try to pick the good stuff of him and ignore the rest, and there is some seriously good stuff overall.

When I was younger, I used to think that it was because they were confused and old...but now I'm getting of that age myself, I'm not so sure..

I sometimes find myself doing it on purpose just to annoy people! [:D]

Like, if I'm at the Supermarket and something comes to say £14.19 and I have a bulging pocketful of change, then I'll hand over a £10 note and 4 £1 coins and the rest in small change rather than hand over a £20 note and get even more small change.
Young folk don't do this, but just hand over the £20 note. (probably 'cos they can't count very well..[;)])
It normally just takes me 10 to 15 seconds...BUT!!!...if I hear someone sighing or quietly saying "tsk"...I REALLY s-l-o---w down and drop coins and count it out wrong etc! [;)]
(Better still is to start searching your pockets for money-off vouchers cut out of magazines)

I think when you actually retire, then you have a lot of time on your hands, so can take it up as a kind of full-time sport or entertainment to pass the time.

Thing that gets me are young folk buying a newspaper at a kiosk with a bloody Credit Card and I've only got 30 seconds till the bus comes!

My daughter (16) has no hesitation in saying she hates old people. [:D]

cheers,

Ron

XXX -> RE: Sequiriyas Books / Lessons / Methods (Apr. 11 2010 6:06:43)

I never count small money. Its a waist of my time, the employees time, and everybody else's time. You can put the coins in a box and when its full bring it to the bank to transfer it to your account. [;)]
I even throw or give away coins that are smaller than 5 cent.

Long time i hated credit card buyers, but it actually doesnt take that long, because the cashier doesnt have to give change. [8|]

He does go into detail but I think it's a good thing- to get the nuance and aire one needs to specific. He's very concerned the rhythm is absolutely right playing seco with a metronome before even playing a note.

Drawn out? Tedious? Yes but I think a solid rhythm and technical base could form this way, then the art can begin. That is where I part ways with RDiaz I also don't enjoy his "smooth jazz" compostions.

As far as the level I consider this beginner. In flamenco the bar is high.

Until I can play any palo to accompany any singer or any dancer I only consider myself an 'improving beginner'. When one has that knowledge then it's the start of the 'intermediate' road, as for 'advanced' well that's a long way off!

Ron your daughter has all the right to believe that, is she the daughter that once said your Bulerias sounded like Voodoo music?

Yep...but that was when she was 13 or something...

These days I'm banned by her from smoking or playing guitar in the house and have been cast into the garage for these sordid activities.

(Sheesh...if I'd known all this at 25, I'd just have bought myself a garage and spent the money on other things..but it's too late to "live and learn" now. [:D])

She said once in deep thought..."Dad....when are you and mum going to die?"

I remembered asking this question of my own Dad when I was a kid who said not to worry because it won't be for a long time yet.

However, I find it hard to tell lies actually, so I said, "Who knows...it could be tomorrow or in 20 years time...nobody knows dear....what made you ask?"

"Oh", she said..."I was just wondering when I was going to get the house." [:D]

Kids are sharp these days! [:D][:D]

Ron
